"Can I take a picture while recording video?"

US

Hi,
I have a D3100 and was excited when I read in the manual that I could take a photograph while recording a video in live view. However, whenever I try this it stops the video recording. Am I doing something wrong or is it just not possible?

Thanks!
Jodi

If it's like the D5100, they say you can "end video mode with a picture" by fully depressing the shutter while recording a movie and it will end video recording and snap a picture.

There is a way to get copies of frames from your videos though... check your manual for "Editing Videos during playback". The D5100 uses the AE-L /AF-L to edit a movie while viewing it and one option is "save selected frame".

I hope that leads you in the right direction.

You can take a picture, which stops video recording, and then start video again.
This enables a mix of high quality still images and lower quality video.
Video can be edited so, depending what happens whilst a still is being taken, the gap in recording can be edited out.

Photography is a bit like archery. A technically better camera, lens or arrow may not hit the target as often as it could if the photographer or archer does not practice enough.
