"Why is my D5000 so slow when taking pictures?"

Why is my D5000 so slow when taking pictures??
It takes so long to beep when i half press the shutter button.
Sometimes i miss the exact moment of wht i was trying to capture.
Any advice??

It would help know a few details to respond adequately:

1. What lens are you using?
2. Camera settings?
3. Lighting conditions?

Have D5K, no issues with its responsiveness with proper camera setting for lens on board.
