"Card f D5000,"A" batteries"

US

I wanted to buy EN-EL9a batteries for my D5000 - NOT available in US yet.!!!And I hope to go to the Grand Canyon THIS summer ... should I buy 3 extra batteries or would 2 extra be plenty?I use flash VERY little, and (now) I'm mostly using live view only when needed (instead of all the time).Seems that I get 150 images per full battery.I do non-pro shows with my images.I don't do fast shooting ,but I MAY try short clip movies on tripod.Card;saw I pack of (4)Sandisk 2gb that write/read at 9-15mg/s (at Costco,$27.00) ...I like 2 GB cards - cause on L/fine I'll STILL get 270ish, AND MY COMPUTER DOES NOT LIKE ME TO LOAD AND ALTER MORE THAN 200 PER DOWNLOAD...TENDS TO FREEZE UP 3/4 WAY THROUGH.Oh,those 2gig cards don't say class 2,4,or 6.Thank you - and Hi to all! ... this is fun! , Larry :this photo...was (a mistake) in Corel, while trying to do something else!!!

Hi Larry,

Welcome to Nikonians!
150 images per charge sounds low compared to the 510 per charge in the Manual. Are you chimping (reviewing the image in the LCD) a lot?
If you don't use Live View your imiges per charge will increase significantly.
I would recommend the Sandisk Extreme series cards or at least the Ultra II's.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

Hi Larry,

Try getting used to using the viewfinder. I have been shooting SLRs for well over 30 years and think that Live View might have been useful less than 5 times. In fact I have had Live View capability since November 2007 and have not found a reason to use it yet.
Using Live View when hand holding the camera will increase the likelyhood of image blur caused by camera shake. When you use the viewfinder, and proper hand holding technique the camera will be much more stable and the quality of your images should improve. The further away from your body the camera is (using Live View) the more unstable it is.
Here is link to an Article on proper hand holding technique: http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/guides/technique/handholding1.html
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

I'm shooting with the LCD turned in so it's not visible at all when I'm taking pictures. Before I pack up, I'll review them on the LCD and retake any that I don't like. I'll delete the really bad ones there, then head home and see if any of the rest are salvageable.

I'm always astonished what the camera actually captures as opposed to what I could see on the LCD. If I do my job in composition, then the camera and PhotoShop will let me end up with good images.

On a full battery charge I took (around) 200 pictures and over 10 minutes of video... and the meter didn't move at all. Basically, if you're getting less than 500 shots, either you have a bad battery (not terribly likely) or something in your process is draining the battery.

Though, I did notice on the charge that the battery had when I got it from the manufacture, I was only able to take maybe 100 charges before I had to charge it. But since then it's been full juice.

And personally, when you can get a 16GB card for less than $40... it's not worth getting 1/8 the size for 1/2 the price.

Hi,

You can find the battery on E-bay for $17.95 shipped or less.

http://cgi.ebay.com/EN-EL9-EN-EL9A-ENEL9-Battery-for-Nikon-D40-D60-D5000_W0QQitemZ270399313175QQcmdZViewItemQQptZBatteries_Chargers?hash=item3ef50e1517&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1234%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

As for 2GB cards, best buy has some 133x 2GB cards for $14.99 right now. In my D5000, with the right settings, the cards allow me to take an unlimited number of back-to-back pictures (continuous shutter release and until the card is full). PNY - Optima Pro 2GB Secure Digital Memory Card

Mark , thank you - good info. (But) my batteries are on the way.Bet these non-Nikon batteries work just fine ,AND they have more lasting power @ 1200 rather than Nikons 1080. Cards ; I found in Costco ;4pack 2gb 100x 15mb/s-read 9mb/s-right , or/also ; 2pack also Sandisk 4gb 100x 15 9 both packs are $27.99 ea. I'm so far planning on the 2gb 4pack. Took this photo today;
