"RAW to JPEG Exposure Loss"
Mon 05-Jul-10 06:06 PM by JohnE Nikon

I have just started experimenting with shooting in RAW as opposed to JPEG fine. I like the idea of having a digital negative. When I convert files to JPEG I lose exposure and have to brighten/add exposure. My RAW originals still look fine. Has anyone had a similar problem? I use Nikon ViewNX for this conversion. I also have Picasa installed and often use for viewing. Could this software interfere with the conversion? Photo's lose exposure however when viewed with either of these progerams.

I have very little experience using ViewNX to convert (I've probably done only about ten files this way), but certainly your JPEG output should look like your raw if you're not using some in-camera settings that are causing the exposure change.

From the sound of it, you're not using RAW to its real advantage: the fact that things aren't burned into the JPEG. Usually one converts the raw file into some lossless intermediate form, then finally converts to JPEG as the last step. If you're converting to JPEG at the front end of the process, you're losing much of the flexibility.

Hi John,

The changes you made in Raw most likely caused the "loss of exposure" that you are seeing when the image is converted to a jpeg.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

Thanks Marty. What should I do to keep changes in my jpeg's? My purpose for shooting RAW was to give me fexibility and allow changes.

Hi John,

The changes you make to the Raw image should be reflected on the computer monitor before you convert the image to a jpeg. I use Capture NX2 to modify Raw files and convert them to TIFF's or jpegs.
I have used View NX (only a few times) to convert images from Raw to jpeg based on the in camera settings without modification and never saw a difference between the jpeg and the Raw images.
Both Capture NX2 and View NX should automatically apply the in camera settings to the image unless the default settings in the software were changed thereby displaying the image as shot.

Are you comparing the images on your monitor: Raw to jpeg or the Raw on the monitor and a print of the jpeg?
Is your monitor calibrated?
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

I'm not sure about monitor calibration, but I am comparing both on the same monitor with View NX. When I get home I will attempt to upload images which will have NEF data. Maybe that will be helpful.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Nikon support had me uninstall and reinstall View NX which worked. Thanks.
