"D5000 will not AF via Viewfinder only Live View, help please."

I have tried to search and can not find an answer.

My new D5000 will not autofocus via the lens in any mode, it will only auto focus via the live view screen which is slow.

The in focus indicator just blinks. Would like to solve this without sending the camera back.

Its a D5000 with 18-55mm VR lens

many thanks
Ben

Hi Ben,

Welcome to Nikonians!
Sorry to hear of your problem.
The problem you are having is very unusual.
If your camera is brand new call the retailer you purchased it from as they may exchange it for a new one.
If you have had it longer than the exchange period.
Go into the camera menu and confirm that the AF system is in AF-A, AF-S or AF-C mode.
Then verify that the AF/M switch on the lens is in AF mode.
You could try cycling the switch back and fouth a few times in case the problem is dirty contacts in the switch.
If that doesn't work, try cleaning the electrical contacts on the lens and camera body with DeOxit. Remount the lens and check.
If that doesn't work, send the camera and lens to Nikon Service for repair.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty
