Also I need to get a memory card for my camera and I'm thinking of getting the SanDisk Extreme III 8GB (Not the 30MB/s one) for $40. Has anyone tried any other memory cards that haven't lagged when shooting in continuous mode? (I know some will be fast for the first few shots then will significantly slow down, which is not what I want)

Welcome to Nikonians! Congratulations on your new D5000 kit! I would strongly recommend getting a Nikon EN-EL9a battery!
The number of images that fill the buffer depends on the image quality and size you set in the camera as well as your Noise Reduction settings. The faster the card the faster it can clear the buffer. The faster the buffer is cleared the more images you can capture per unit time. Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

I'm new here, but have learned a lot from what I have read, and from a few things I have tried.
I purchased a 2-pack of Sandisk Ultra 4 gig cards from Costco for $34.00 which work great for me. A recent trip to D.C. filled both of those cards, an a portion of another one, so the bigger the better.
As mentioned above, I probably wouldn't buy an off brand battery, and besides, the Nikon battery isn't that much more. I purchased a second battery for my vacation and never needed it, but it was reassuring to have. I shot about 250 pics a day, leaving the camera on almost all the time. I was amazed at the life of the battery. The battery meter never showed less than all three bars at the end of the day.
