When I played with the D5000 I had my D300 with me. I set both camera in Manual mode. ISO 3200 1/30 shutter speed f/5.6 Found that the D5000 was a little better. They were close.. had to pixel peak real close to tell the difference
ISO 3200 1/60 shutter speed f/8 Found that the D5000 was a hair better. Same thing... had to look real close to tell a difference.
When I went up to Hi 1.0 or I think that is 6400 ISO was when I started to see the D300 look a little better than the D5000 Not by much though. But, for head to head comparison... the D5000 stands its ground.
This is my opinion... it wasn't really a true controlled test. All my shots were hand held, which is where most shots actually happen anyway.
