Newbie Lens Question
One of the reasons I bought my D5000 was to take photos of my daughter playing volleyball inside high school gyms. I have quickly learned that there is a little difficulty in doing that, and getting a decent quality picture. The best results I achieved so far was using my kit f/3.5-f/5.6 18-55mm lens, zoomed out to 18mm at f/3.5 for the for the best quality shot. (I'm getting to the question...)
Since I am not sitting far from the action, If I zoomed that lens all the way into 55, that is just about the right zoom level I am looking for. More would be better, but price would be worse.
Now for the dumb question..... I'll try to explain it right.
If I buy a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens, will that be equivalent to, or have the same zoom level as my 18-55mm lens zoomed in to 50mm?

The prime 50mm would be the same as your zoom at 50mm.
One thing the 50mm would give you is a bigger aperture that lets in lots more light. Note: Nikon's 50mm f/1.8 will not auto-focus on the D5000; you would need the 50mm f/1.4 AFS lens.
Indoor sports is usually low-light sports; this is a specialized area of photography that tends to be rather expensive in the long run to get the quality photos most desire.
Check out the sports forum. Lots of volleyball discussions there.

Yes! The 50mm prime will provide the same FOV (Field of View) as your 18-55mm zoom with the zoom ring set to 50mm.
One thing to keep in mind is the AF 50mm f/1.8D does not have an AF motor built into the lens and therefore will not AF when mounted on your D5000. It will work using Manual Focus and the rangefinder built into the D5000 will assist with focusing.
If you want a 50mm prime that will AF on your D5000 your choices are the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G AF-S or the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX HSM. Both are priced between $450.00 and $500.00.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!
