70-300 vs 55-200? I am trying to stay within some budge ie under $250 which seems hard but found some good deals on the adorama site. I will be traveling to vancouver in october and have a few events before then that I really wanted to make sure I had a decent tele lens for.

Welcome to Nikonians! Congratulations on your new D3000 kit! The Nikkor 55-70mm VR is a good choice. If you need something longer or are looking for something better, the Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR is the next step up. Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Honestly I am not sure what I need, I do take pictures that I am just not close enough to, esp when I am in canada and taking landscape pictures or when I am in the city and taking random the 18-55 is just not enough zoom. The 70-300 is a bit more than I can spend. I am reading over the past post to gain as much knowledge as I can but still really new to all photography as well as Cs4.

Go to a camera store in your area and mount a 55-200mm VR lens on your D3000. Then try the 70-300mm VR. You will then be able to visualize the longer lenses Field of View (FOV). Most landscape images are captured using a wide angle lens. Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!
