"D3000 just bought"

Ok everyone, Ive only had point and shoots before, but went with the nikon d3000 and really like it, I know its a entry level dslr but at least I am getting my feet wet.

I currently have the 18-55mm lens and looking to get another lens to add to the collection. I was looking at the Nikon 55mm - 200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Zoom Lens

but wanted to ask people that have other lens or that lens to see what I should go with next. I mostly shot abstract, innercity buildings, sunsets, lakes, some macro etc.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to Nikonians, Jordan

Enjoy your new camera.

The 55-200 is a good lens for starting. If you want more reach, an alternate is the AFS 70-300.

70-300 vs 55-200? I am trying to stay within some budge ie under $250 which seems hard but found some good deals on the adorama site. I will be traveling to vancouver in october and have a few events before then that I really wanted to make sure I had a decent tele lens for.

Hi Jordan,

The 55-200mm VR is much better than decent! If 200mm is enough reach for your needs it will serve you well.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

Hi Jordan,

Welcome to Nikonians!
Congratulations on your new D3000 kit!
The Nikkor 55-70mm VR is a good choice.
If you need something longer or are looking for something better, the Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR is the next step up.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

Honestly I am not sure what I need, I do take pictures that I am just not close enough to, esp when I am in canada and taking landscape pictures or when I am in the city and taking random the 18-55 is just not enough zoom. The 70-300 is a bit more than I can spend. I am reading over the past post to gain as much knowledge as I can but still really new to all photography as well as Cs4.

Hi Jordan,

Go to a camera store in your area and mount a 55-200mm VR lens on your D3000. Then try the 70-300mm VR. You will then be able to visualize the longer lenses Field of View (FOV).
Most landscape images are captured using a wide angle lens.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty
