"Using CNX2 with Photomatix HDR Program"

Ellenville, US

Is it effective to use CNX2 with Photomatix Pro, or does it work out better to use LR3 with Photomatix?

Hi David,

I use Photomatix Pro and HDR Efex with Capture NX2 and it works great. I use the “Edit List” to open the programs right from inside Capture NX2. In fact you can use it with Nik, Topaz, Photoshop, OnOne, or most other software from inside Capture NX2 that I use as my main editor. I have Lightroom 3 but never used it with Photomatix as a plug-in.

Hopefully someone can tell you how that works. It doesn’t matter what editor you use, it works the same once you import your picture into it. Lightroom might be to pick the pictures you want load into Photomatix instead of doing a search to import them into Photomatix.

Good Luck,
Bill

I am interested in how you use HDR Efex with CNX 2. Nik system requirements seems to indicate that it requires some Adobe program to run.

Hi

The Lightroom version of any Nik filter works as a stand-alone program, you can call it from inside NX2, or Photo Mechanic, or View NX2.

Note, one limitation of calling external editors from within NX2 is that you can only pass one file at a time to the external editor, so for HDR or Panos, you need to open the editor then add additional files to the list. CNX2 converts the file you specify to a TIFF, so you need to convert the other files to TIFF before you call the external editor.

Hi Archie,

When you install the “Edit List” you can set it up to run 12 programs from inside Capture NX2. It’s a great little program by a man in AU. Here is his instructions:

http://www.nikonians.org/dcfp/user_files/191195.zip

‘EditList2’ instructions. This program makes it possible to call many ‘Open With’ applications from
within Nikon Capture NX2, which only allows you to specify one external editor at a time. You can
add up to 12 programs to the list.
You can use this program to edit photos using the Lightroom versions of any of Nik Software’s
programs (eg HDR Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, or DFine.), also Photoshop, Elements, Photomatix,
etc., without having to keep changing the ‘Open With’ application in NX2. It also works for Topaz
filters, by installing the free Topaz Fusion Express and using that to call any other Topaz filters.
To install the program:
For 32 bit Windows, unzip the file EditList2.exe into a folder C:\Program Files\EditList,
For 64 bit Windows, unzip the file EditList2(64).exe into a folder C:\Program Files (x86)\EditList .
The main difference between this version 2 and the original EditList is that this one has a ‘Setup’
mode which makes it much easier to create and manage your list of programs.
Note: if you have been using the original EditList program with no problems, leave your EditList.dat
file in the folder, and the program will use the information already there when it first opens.
If you have been having problems with the EditList.dat file, delete it and the program will create a
new empty one, allowing you to add your programs to the list.
To Enter Setup Mode:
Start the program by directly double clicking on the file ‘EditList2.exe’ or EditList2(64).exe that you
have just installed. If the program is started directly (i.e. not from within Capture NX2,) it
automatically starts in Setup mode.
Once in Setup mode, you have the option of Adding programs, Deleting programs or moving a
program up or down the list. To Edit, Delete or Move a program, click on it, then select the action.
When you have added or changed your programs, Exit and Save the file.
To Use EditList:
Open Capture NX2 and change the ‘Open With’ application (Edit/Preferences/General ) to
‘C:\Program Files\EditList\EditList2.exe’ for 32 bit Windows, or
‘C:\Program Files (x86)\EditList\EditList2(64).exe’ for 64 bit Windows.

You can find the Edit List here and if the link doesn't work contact me and I will email it to you. It's a great program when you use different software and use Capture NX2 for your editor.

Good Luck,
Bill

Hi Bill,
Will this method of adding applications to CNX2's edit list work on a Mac, and are the steps you listed any different for setting it up for a Mac?

Hi David

Sorry, but the program works on PC's only. No Mac version.

You can just use NX2's 'Edit with..' command. You can only set one external editor at a time though.

David,
This is David. I just wanted to thank you for your response to my question. My new Mac seems to be much faster than my old PC so I want to try some NIK programs with or without Lightroom 3, instead of using CNX2 at all. Do you think this is worth a try or a bad idea?
Thanks, again,
David

Hi David,

Nik programs are very good so give them a try. I think you will have to use them with Lightroom for now as they don’t work as standalone programs, and they work great in Lightroom as you will see. I just delete the one I don’t want to keep and it is right there by your Raw file. Try the new Lightroom 4 out it has a different way of editing that you might as well get used to now.

Good Luck,
Bill

Hi David,

For Mac users I also forgot to add, and think it was mention here somewhere in this post that you can open all Nik or other software programs from Nikons View NX2 and is very easy to setup in there. Plus it is free to download and use. So if you use Capture NX2 to edit your pictures and then open them in View NX2, right click on the picture you want to open and then pick the program you want to use to edit it with some more. Even works with Photoshop. I hope this help you out opening your programs and this way you don't even have to use Lightroom.

Good Luck,
Bill

Thanks for that information. It's nice to know that things can be simpler, or at least more direct using your suggestion.

Hi David

as mentioned, you can use View NX2 to 'Open with' any of the Nik software (Lightroom version). One thing to note, View NX2 does not convert the file to TIFF, it just sends the file as is, so you will need to do your NEF to TIFF conversion first.

I'm not sure why you are opening tiffs in PhotoMatix Pro? It works
with NEFs just fine. To open a NEF inside CNX2 with PMPro
I just go to File/Open With:

After I process a NEF in PMPro, I export the Tone Mapped image
as a 16bit Tiff. Must be a different workflow entirely; feel free to
ignore this whole post.

Happy Shooting!

Hi Gary

are you sure you are exporting a NEF to PMPro? To the best of my knowledge NX2 always converts any file to a TIFF before it sends the file to any 'Open with' editor. Even if you already have a TIFF open, it makes a copy of the TIFF and sends the copy to the other editor.

I know PMPro can open NEF files, but you need to open the NEF file directly in PMPro. I would prefer to do any basic edits in NX2 first, then do my NEF to TIFF conversion in NX2, then open the file in PMPro.

If you want to send unconverted NEF files to any external editor, then ViewNX2 does not convert the file first, it just sends it 'as is'. You can use this, or just open the NEF directly in the other editor. Any edits that have been done in NX2 will not show up in the new editor though.

Hi David S,

It won’t work on a Mac, but email David in Sydney, AU and ask if he will make it work on a Mac. If I remember right he said he would if there were enough people that wanted it.

Anyone else that uses a Mac that use Capture NX2 and want this program you should do the same.

David if you read this can you make this work on a Mac? I am sure a lot of people out there would really like this if it doesn’t take too much of your time. I have heard quit a few that would love to have it.

Hi Bill

I'm sorry, I have no experience with a Mac, so at the moment I am unable to rewrite it to work on a Mac. If you would like to buy me a Mac, I'll give it a go....

I believe that someone on Flikr has written a script that does something similar for a Mac.
