I can't find where I read it, but somewhere I read that it would start manufacturing in Japan then move it to Thailand.

I don't know the answer, but it's nothing to be concerned about. The D700 will be assembled using the same materials and the same Nikon quality control processes wherever it is built

Camera store here on Okinawa, Japan called for me and says the frist batch will be made in Japan. Who knows how long that will be?

I've heard that Nikon gear that is made in Japan hold a higher resale value. I have a D70 and a D200, my wife has a D300 all made in Thailand and none of them are for sale. It really doesn't make a deference to me, it's quality gear either way.

They are being made at the Sendai, Japan plant. Nikon just completed a major expansion there in preparation for their pro-line expansion.
