"D700 at Chicagoland"

At last night's NASCAR race at Chicagoland Speedway, Nikon had a display booth in association with Central Camera of Chicago.

I was given the brief opportunity to hold a D700 with grip and a 70-200 f2.8 mounted to it.

The camera feels very much like a D300. Nice simplified controls on the back (as compared to my D200).

I've never been a fan of battery grips and this one was no different. With the 70-200 mounted, this was a heavy setup. I'd prefer it without the grip, but that's my preference.

Nikon rep said that availability would be limited until the first of the year. I thought that was interesting since it conflicts with what several dealers have told me.

Just thought that I'd share first opinions.

Sound good! I'm with you on the grip, bought one to try on my D200.. kept it for a year or so and sold it on becuase i didnt use it very much. Doesnt make the D200 feel like the D2X to hold, just heavier.

About availability, i wouldnt worry- this camera isnt a D3 i think there will be plenty to go around.

Thanks Matthew,

I agree. Several dealers have told me that they expect to fill their waiting lists with their initial allocation. The Nikon rep was almost defensive with his denial of this ("I can show you my pre-orders"). Not sure if he was talking with his marketing hat on or his customer service hat.

Whatever. I hope he's wrong as I want my hands on one of these babies very soon.

On a side note. This is the very first NASCAR event that I've been to in years without a single white lens visible with the working press. There might have been some there, but from my vantage point sweeping the front stretch and most of the pits they weren't visible. This confirms a trend at NASCAR that I noticed with the Milwaukee races in June where D3's seemed to outnumber the white lenses among the working press. I thought that was interesting.
