When can we realistically expect to see the D700 cameras at our local Nikon dealer? How long will it take for Nikon to produce the D700 in the numbers needed?

Hard to say since no one really knows when the camera will start shipping -- I've heard late July to September. But I suspect it will be at least January before you can buy a D700 off-the-shelf at your local camera store. It took about six months for the D3 and D300 to reach that point.

Dealers in Europe are already demonstrating final production models to customers and are swearing that Nikon will crank up deliveries on July 25. They also are saying that they have enough production to better keep up with supplies as opposed to the D3.

Through the judicious use of adjustment layers, no pixels were actually harmed in the processing of my shots..

If they start shipping in august I will guess that it will be the end of november or december before you see one on the shelf at a dealer. If you pre-order today you will probably get it in october. Good Luck.

That is not the way it worked with the D300. It appeared on time, as promised, and was readily available very quickly.

Where did you come up with this info? I pre-ordered my D300 and got it a few days after it was released. This won't be the type of camera that will just be sitting on the shelf, but if you do your due diligence, you should probably be able to get one by September. If you pre-order, probably by August. This is based on roughly what happened with the D300.
