Although I haven't looked at the press release I have seen late July as the date in the US.

DPReview says

The D700 is supplied with battery EN-EL3e, charger, and Nikon Software Suite and will go on sale from 25 July 2008 with a MSRP guide price of €2599.


It seems that when the release date is that specific, it isn't all that far off the mark.

From the Nikon press release at http://press.nikonusa.com/2008/07/the_agile_new_nikon_d700_fxfor.php :

"The new FX-format Nikon D700 D-SLR camera will be available late July 2008, and will have an estimated selling price of $2,999.95 (body only)."
