Which one will bottom out first and at what price?

Currently one of the retailers I trust and have used before is showing $2319 for the body no tax no shipping.

As I mention in another thread, the $300 instant rebate will end in a few weeks. That will push the price back up, so your $2319 price now will be $2619 in a few weeks. So I don't think it will bottom out anytime soon.

I just bought mine and it was worth it.

Which B&H are you looking at? The bhphotovideo.com site I go to has it at $2999.95 - $300 = 2699.95 and it's been that way for at least a couple weeks.

I'll answer my own question -- if you add the D700 to the shopping cart it's $2319.95

whenever you buy, the chances are high that you will have bought at the upper side of the price in time. so if price is your main concern, best is not to buy at all, that's the only way how to avoid you will be upset when Nikon drops the price another 99$.

There is always another price coming; some better and some worse. There is always another model coming, too. That's how manufacturers succeed; by moving technology forward continuously. Sure, you could wait for the D700x, but then the rumors will start up about a D800 model and then a D800x, etc. It will never stop.

But while you wait...and wait, how many months of enjoyment and how many thousands of great photographs have you lost?

The thing with tech and price is, by the time something gets cheap enough, a newer and better model becomes available and the cycle starts all over again...

Sean, just give in. Most of us did, and didn't regret it. And as chili555 wrote above, you're missing out on a lot by waiting.

My D700 is due here today from Buydig.com for $2319 along with a 14-24 and 24-70. My D300, 12-24 & 18-200 sold in a few hours on the Nikonians "sell" forum.

I bought mine the day it was announced, and had one of the first ones. If I didn't like it, could have easily sent it back. Now have over 25k shots, and hundreds of photos printed and shared, many which I could not have captured with my D300. The $600- 700 I could have saved by waiting a year seems trival. My opinion is we shoot to capture what is happening around us, and if something better comes along, I take advantage of it.

Now the D3x is of no interest- have not blown up my landscape shots past 20" x 30", so why clog my computer with even more bytes. Just one person's opinion. I'm sure you can now get a D100 real cheap...

I agree. Raw 14 bit D700 files require twice as much memory as similar D300 files. A 4GB card holds about 220 exposures on the D300 and only about 150 on the D700. I'm guessing that the D3X can fit fewer than 75 files onto a 4 gig card.

I've not compared file sizes in practice yet, but the camera manuals suggest what you say is inaccurate. The manuals quote 24.7 MB for a D700 FX mode 14-bit Uncompressed NEF file, and 25.3 MB for a D300 14-bit Uncompressed NEF file.

If you're comparing a D700 DX Crop Mode file with a D300 file, then I'd agree with you

My bad. I should have said that I only reported what I observed with the same empty 4GB card in both cameras. I need to examine closely how my D700 is set up. I just got it yesterday and haven't done much more than glance at the menu settings.

Its £1499 now. I think i gonna order tomorrow.Offcourse there will always be another price but this price is perfect for me.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago from B&H. Price dropped twice in the 2 weeks I've had it.
They credited me first $100 and now another $50...(you have 15 day return with bh so if price drops in that time they will credit your cc but you have to ask they don't do it automatically.)
I'm loving it and got the camera for my happy price.
Of course it will continue to drop by spring when they announce the new ______.

Now I only wish the lens prices varied as much....Got to save up for the 24-70.

Apparently they just matched buydig.com, which sold a D700 to me a week ago for $2319 (less 2.5% or $58 cashback becauase I went to buydig from live.com).

I have an additional personal article policy on my home insurance to cover all my camera gear in case it gets stolen or damage when I travel.

I've read mixed reviews on the Mack warranty. I've never purchased an extended warranty on any of my Nikon equipment. I've never had any issues with my D70, D200 or D300.

I found an web site entry for this firm that indicates an Oct 2008 startup......I would run as fast possible from this site and if you have the urge to order, do so with a reliable/proven electronics company, there are many to choose from, and the going price will be ~$2319 these days for the D700.

If you don't want to wait till after the holidays after the new tax year, buy from B&H, Adorama, Amazon, etc..those are reputable sites that you can trust.

I just saw this thread. I do not know the outfit that is selling the D700, but it could be one of these up sales sites. The D700 seems to be an open box item and imported – no warranty. After you order the camera, they will call you back and try to push the accessories that are usually included with the camera at outrageous prices. If you do not buy them, they threaten you not to send the camera. It becomes a mess and these people are really terrible.

I found out about them, when I was purchasing my D40. They had the D80 for $399.00. I called them up and they were very rude and answered with only yes and nos. I finally told this guy: “You are a man of a thousand words that just told me everything I wanted to know.” Hanged-up.

I did some research on the Internet and this site (I forgot the name) was terrible. One lady had a huge problem with them and finally decided to cancel the order. After an hour or so of screaming at each other, on the phone, the guy said something that I’ll never forget: “I will cancel the order, witch! (with a b)” Others had similar experiences.

Find out about them, first.

I bought my D300 last December for $1800. Now I got the D700 for $2319. It's amazing what a year makes. The lesson learn is to wait at least 6 months.

I bought the D700 2 days ago at Samys Camera in Santa Ana, CA. It was $2699.99 out the door, no tax and 6 months no payments, no intrest for 6 months. I read your post today re: B&H price. I called Samys. They checked out my claim and told me to come in and they would credit me the dif. I did. They did. I'm a happy camper again. I like to do bus. with the local stores if pos. Face to face and a good return policy are hard to beat!

The price they had was $2999.99, minus $300 rebate = 2699+ they matched the BH price of 2319.95. It seems they all want to match prices but not shout to loudly about it. You have to know or ask. At least that was my experience. I like the D700 but not with the DX lenses I have. I will have to put them up for sale. 17-55mm and 18-200mm. I think my 12-24mm is sold. I tried them but just didn't like what I see in the viewfinder and the lower resolution. Anybody have good results with the D700 and DX lenses?

I have had excellent experience buying from buydig.com. They have been the low cost supplier several times, usually by a considerably lower price. They shipped me a 52 inch 850 series Samsung flat screen and everything about the transaction was 100% OK. One warning: they are not the place to buy from if you are not sure exactly what you want. Their return policy is not nearly as generous as BHPhotoVideo.

B&H is my first choice also but when I paid Buydig $2319 B&H was still chargin 2699. I fully undertand about putting it in the cart.

I’m waiting for tomorrow to see what the price of the D700 will be after the official $300 rebate from Nikon ends. The problem for what I read (I am not certain that it was in Thom Hogan’s site) is that the retailers cannot deviate from Nikon’s prices without their approval. Therefore, what they do is that they will only quote you the true price after you put the camera in the shopping cart (something that is OK with Nikon – go figure that one out.) In this case, B&H is really selling the camera for $2,619 - the $300 instant rebate = $2,319. The problem with the retailers, as I understand it, is that Nikon will take up two months to reimburse them.

I guess that the price will go up to $2,619 unless Nikon offers a bigger and better rebate. On the other hand, what I read is that Nikon will offer an instant rebate between the 28th and a week or so after the 1st on the D300.

That D700 is the first horse of the full frame clone
out of the barn. Do you bet on the first horse
or the best horse?

Here in Canada the D700 body is still way out
of my price range at C$3100.00.

And I doubt if the price will drop to a reasonable figure,
which for me would be 'round $1500.00.

Maybe a lesser version of the full-frame will appear
in the future; I don't require all the whistles, bugles
and daisies of the D700 full frame.

Photography should be pleasure for one's self.
however such pleasure no longer exists
hence all kit has now been sold.

There will always be a better horse and best is relative.

I've own three Nikon bodies previously with each one being better than the previous, but the D700 has been the one that I feel truly satisfied with.

Welp, given this is the last day of the rebate, I decided Nikon wins the game of chicken and I just ordered my D700. Given the capabilities of this camera, I think it will be a while before you see any at $1500. I think this one may have a longer shelf life, but I have been wrong before.

Same thing here. I ordered the D700 on Christmas day and it is still sitting at B&H “Processing” – turkeys! They had all of Friday to ship it. I guess, that they’ll ship it tomorrow night – UPS is closed the weekends.

If the camera goes down in price, I will give B&H a call to tell them at $2,319 I’m getting a severe case of “buyer’s remorse.” They are pretty good, though. The day after I purchased the Tamron 90mm Macro, the lens dropped $50 in price. They credited my account for the difference.

The other thing is that I’m going to set up with B&H a way to automatically deposit my paycheck into my B&H account. What’s the difference? The money ends up there anyway and why the hustle.

My purchase was not a case of NAS. I was set to wait until either the D400 or D800 came out, to go after the D700. However, you guys pushed me over the edge – and that is the honest truth. Everyone, or it seems every one, is getting the D700. Am I missing an opportunity here? I did not want to take the chance, because I would not forgive myself for not pulling the trigger. On the other hand, if the camera goes down in price, I can always use the same old argument: “Look at the shots I would have missed by not having the camera.” It makes it all right, then.

The rebate by Nikon is over. The new price at B&H for the D700 is: $2496.95 or a savings of $177.00 compared my purchase price of $2,319.95. I am truly amazed at the amount of money I save when I spend money.

Now that the D700 is done, to my next item: the Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 ED N (whatever.) I found a way to purchase it – magic.

When I saw that the B&H price went up today I pulled the trigger on Adorama because they were still offering the D700 for 2319$. I needed to make the purchase in the next few weeks and frankly was tired of wondering if the price would fall or rise after the long internal battle of D300 vs D700. Feeling a little guilty over the splurge but I'm hope that will go away after the box arrives.

Amazon.com also still has it for $2,319.95

I bought mine on 7 November for $2429.96, and have had nearly 2 months of use out of mine. That price was free shipping and legally tax free in California. So even though it has been lower, I am still very happy with my purchase. I have already taken pictures that would have been impossible with my D200, which makes up for any later savings.

That's funny.....I have this disease but I usually am happy with the purchase.

I spoke with a friend of mine who is the mgr. ofa large camera retailer and he said that Nikon usually lowers the prices after Christmas around Feb when the buying slows down and if I could wait I might get the best deal. I tried waiting but pulled the trigger on the Ritz Paypal deal but due to extreme technical difficulties the purchase never went through. I took this as an omen and am now waiting a little longer. Hope I didn't make a mistake, only time will tell and most of my shoots don't occur until after Feb anyway.

The US warranty would be invalid, but I recall that there is also an international warranty card as well. Wouldn't you still be able to use that in Canada?

You've never had to deal with Canada Customs & Revenue, eh?
If something goes out for repair and even though
I have filled in all the correct paperwork, tax will be applied
as if the camera was purchased new, at the prevailing current price
in Canada. That is, the price of purchase stateside plus the current
exchange value plus duty plus a handling charge plus provincial and federal taxes. Often the price charged is way more than the money saved on the foreign purchase and often well exceeds the retail list price in Canada. Went through this problem with the repair of
a specialty radio frequency scanning radio, end result was a charge
far higher than the orignal price of the radio a year prior.

If you've been wronged then you have to fight and fight and fight to
get your money back. The problems simply are not worth the difficulty.

however such pleasure no longer exists
hence all kit has now been sold.

Your guess is as good as mine. I have no idea what Nikon is up to. However, you would have saved only $177, which is ~ 7% of what seems to be the new purchase price. $177 out of $2,500 is not that big of a deal and it can only go down in price.

I think I am still the low price champ. I checked the price at B&H a couple of months ago by putting it in my cart and it came up $2249.99. I didn't ask questions, I just bought it. When I checked again later that day, the price was back up. It was delivered for free, since I am a NAPP member, and I've been loving it ever since.

New price today is $2496.00 once you put it in the cart. It shows $2999.00 before you do. The rebate is gone.

I just ordered my D700 last week for $2319. at B&H, however, the rebate has ended and I think the new price is still $2949. and free shipping.

Very cool, Mel! Still some deals out there, then. Although I think what happened when I had looked at Adorama is that they have a higher price until you put it in the cart - but they don't obviously SAY it will be lower when you put it in the cart. I saw the $2696 price and thought that was their price. You have to hover the mouse over the "suggested price" link to actually see the notice to add it to the cart for the real price. Not a very good web site design in that respect. I could have saved $80. Oh well, not that big a deal, by the time I pay to ship back the one from Ritz and go through that hassle it wouldn't be worth it. Mine will be here tomorrow and it will be interesting to compare it to my D3, which I am looking to sell off in a couple of weeks.

I have a D300 which I love but...(NAS kicking in) My brother phoned me on Christmas offering to buy it if I wanted to get a D700...well, what to do? I obviously would love the D700 but does anyone have any idea when/if the upgraded version, a la D3x will be released? Will it be a D800 or a D700x? I would hate to go out and get a D700 just to have it replaced by a more up to date version.

Hi DuraAce, a couple points for you to ponder in making your decision:

- I wouldn't personally consider a D800/D700X as an "upgrade to the D700" but rather an alternate tool to the D700. The D700 is a killer low-light machine, the D800 I assume will be a killer app for studio/landscape etc. Which type of photography is more important to you?

- My complete speculation is that should Nikon produce it, the D800 will be mid to late 2009 before it is available and it will cost quite a bit more than the D700. But who knows, Nikon has pleasantly surprised me a lot in the last 18 months!

Thanks for the reply Steve,

I guess I want it all. I live overseas and travel quite a bit. Photography has always been my favorite hobby and the travel gives me the opportunity to get some great shots. The problem is I shoot indoors as much as outdoor/landscape and I constantly find myself wishing I had a tripod for outdoor low light city scenery. I have gotten some really excellent indoor shots where flash was forbidden
(inside the Vatican Museum) So I would have to wonder how the D700 would have performed.
I just want to have the most versatile kit possible. While the price is definitly an issue, I am willing to spend the money for a better shot because I may never pass that way again.

Nikon Rumors reports upcoming price increases in Canada and rumored increases in Australia and the UK.

Already happened here in Canuckland on some items I track - 500VR is up approximately 470 Canadian pesos and D700 jumped up (around) $150 off of their recent lowest prices.

14-24 jumped about $100 back in early December.
