"Wireless transmitter for D700"

GB

HI,
I'm trying to find a wireless transmitter to transfer photos from my d700 to a laptop when out on location and in my home studio. I have only been able to find the Nikon own brand WT-4 but it is very costly and I am not sure I like the idea of it having to be tethered to my belt or neck. Does anyone know of any third party devices that would do the same job?

Thanks

Faye

Well, if you don't want the WT-4, you may:

* Downgrade to a D90 and get an Eye-Fi card: http://www.eye.fi/
* Use an Eye-Fi card with a CompactFlash-to-SD Adapter. Read the net, some brands may work better than others. You might also have some limitations with transfer rate and write speed. Your luck may vary.

Good luck!

Thank you Hussam,
I might give an eye-fi cards a go with my D80 as it takes SD cards and I can see how it works, but I very rarely use Jpegs which is all these appear to work with due to file sizes.
For my D700 it looks like I'm just going to have to stick to the Wt-4 but it does look like something from the arc, so here's hoping it doesn'y perform like that too.

I also like the idea of shooting tethered when shooting with my D300, but I shoot raw, don't like the WT-4's bulk and price, and the eye-fi cards don't support large RAW files. So my solution is sneaker-net - I shoot about 20 images or so, move the card to the laptop, do a quick check and put it back in the camera. Depending on the situation I may actually put a copy of the images on the laptop's Lacie USB drive while I am checking them out. It's not ideal, but it works pretty well and it cost me nothing, and it's 80% of the value of shooting tethered, and it forces me to take breaks

I'm with Paco on this. Simple is sometimes best. I pull the memory card out of the camera, pop it into the card reader and dump the files using Lightroom. As soon as Lightroom has downloaded all the images, out of the card reader and into the camera for a quick format and I'm ready to go again with very little downtime. Using two memory cards would eliminate just about all the downtime. Simple, easy, fast. What more could you ask for?

Thanks Paco,
I would normally do just as you sugest and dump the photos from my card every so often etc which is great when I am at home and using my own sudio.
However, I was looking for a quicker solution as I was taking photos for the school prom and Christmas fair (photos with Mr Claus!) and to make ordering easier within very tight time frames I wanted the parents to have instant access to the images. That way my helper could share the files on a laptop and complete the order slip while I could carry on shooting otherwise we could end up with a large backlog of parents waiting to choose the image they wanted - does that make sense?
To cut a long story short- we have a great IT teacher in school who helped rig up an extended 5meter+ USB cable so I still had to shoot tethered but he also rigged up an extra monitor so I could check my photos straight away on a large screen using Micosoft camera and scanner wizard(so had to use jpegs in this instance) and the parents also had instant access to the files on the laptop where my helper noted the file nos., ordered and copied the files to the necessary folders ready for tweaking and printing after the event.
It worked better than I thought and cables did not prove a problem as I just ensured they were over my shoulder. It's not a way I would choose but it didn't cost anything and was a good compromise for these school based charity events.
Now we just need to devise a way for taking and transferring images at sporting events- don't quite think cables over a rugby or hockey pitch would work-Hm!!!
Thanks again for your help

Surely 2 cards would have the same index numbers 100-1/100-2 ....
Wouldn't the host system refuse to load images with the same numbers.
Or am I missing the blinking obvious?

That would depend upon how you have the file sequencing number to be done, continous from last exposure or reset to zero for new card/folder. See page 300, d6: File Number Sequence of the D700 manual.

Or rename them adding the EXIF date and time for the original image during the transfer.

I just wanted to add this comment about the CompactFlash-to-SD Adapter as we tried one today on the D700. Due to Nikon dumping support for Compact Flash Type II cards with the D700, you have to be very careful as most of these adapters are Type II. Also, the new 4GB Eye-Fi Anniversary Edition is SDHC so some of the older adapters won't support it. You have to make sure you have a SDHC to CF adapter.

I have the WT-4A for studio work with my D3. The D3 has an Arca Swiss "L" plate to which I attach a short rail on the left side (or portrait) A-S shoe. The WT-4A case has a belt slot which slides nicely onto the rail. This puts the WT-4A on the camera. I gather the USB cable into loops and secure it with a cable tie to shorten it to proper length. This rig works very nicely.
