"Adobe Camera Raw only sees 8-bit NEFs?"

San Diego, US

I'm running CS3 with ACR 4.6 here. Any NEF I open, it says the file is using 8-bit color. It says 8-bit even if the camera is set to 14. Any idea why this is?

If I open the NEF in Aperture and then export that into Photoshop, it produces a 16-bit file which is what I would be expecting Photoshop to do on its own.

What am I missing here?

ACR also says "Adobe RGB (1998)" for all NEFs I take, even though the camera is DEFINITELY set to sRGB. Any idea why that's happening? Again, CS3, Mac. If this is more of a Photoshop than a Nikon question, apologies.

Click on the underlined text that you are reading in acr, and a dialogue box should open. You can then set the acr defaults for colorspace and bit depth. The next time you open a raw image it will use the values you entered.
