If you're on Windows http://opanda.com/en/iexif/download.htm
If you're on a Mac, open an image in Preview and use the Inspector.

Hi Silvio,

Use Opanda IExif 2.3 to open a jpeg created in the camera.
scroll down to about the 8th line from the bottom: Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

Hi Silvio,

You have to open Opanda IExif 2.3, then use it to open a jpeg image that was created (without modification in your computer) in the D700.
Opanda will then list the Exif data. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and the 8th line from the bottom on the left will read Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera and on the right will be the number.
It will not work with NEF files or jpegs created or modified in the computer.

Best Regards,
Marty

Are you a flickr member? If so, when you upload a JPG to the site, it pulls the EXIF data...you can see it there as well..

Hi Silvio,

What does the 8th line from the bottom of the page say in the Entry Column on the left side.
On my computer:
Entry____________________________________________ Value_______________
00A3
Total Number of Shutter Actuations for Camera.....25000
00A8
00B0
00B1
00B6
00B7
00B8
00B9
(bottom)

You will have to expand the width of the columns to see the entire text.

Best Regards,
Marty

Of course, there is always good old Picasa -- free from Google.
Just make sure that when you open the jpeg image, the info button on the bottom right is activated. You will see a wealth of info about the image and close to the bottom after scrolling down:
Shutter count =

Give it a whirl!
