I just received my MBD-10 and was anxious to try it out, however, with the battery grip I still am only getting 5FPS. In all of my manuals and even "Mastering the Nikon D700" it clearly states that I should be getting 8FPS.
What am I doing wrong?

You will need to use the EN-EL4a battery on the grip to achieve the 8fps.

I need to double check but I think you can also get 8fps with Lithuim AA batteries...Rechargeable AAs like the Sanyo Eneloops might also get you 8 fps.

(Using the standard EN-EL3e will in will not increase your fps; the camera can function with a battery in the MB-D10 only or in the camera body only, or both.)

You are correct. The frame rate increases only with the large EN-EL4a or AA batteries, not with the EN-EL3e.

Thanks guys. I'm not sure that the extra 3 frames per second is worth the extra investment, but I am loving the added grip on the camera.

If you just want the use of the portrait-mode buttons, the grip works fine with no batteries in it for the weight savings. (Or battery in the grip and not in the camera.)

I picked up a slightly used EN-EL4a and a MH-21 charger from Adorama for about $150.00 (and a new Bl-3) - but the combo costs upwards of $300.00 new which practically doubles the cost of the grip. Based on a recommendation here, I am going to try shooting without the battery in the camera to offset the weight as the EN-EL4a is noticeably bigger and heavier than the EN-EL3e. In addition to the FPS increase you can also shoot a substantially more on one charge with the EN-EL4a so it does save you from having to pack a second battery if you are going to be shooting lots of photos.

Hi Jason,

With an EN-EL4a in the MB-D10 you won't need an EN-EL3e in the camera body.
I usually get at least 4500 images per charge and often significantly more.
