"Problem with SB800 on D700"

AU

Hi Guys, I have a problem with a D700 body I recently purchased. When I attach an SB800 to the hotshoe the SB800 emits a series of pre-flashes and there is a delay before the shutter is released.
I put the SB 800 on a D3X body and I don't get the pre-flashes nor the delay so I know the problem is with the D700.

Could the previous owner have set something up in the flash control system in the D700 which causes this delay and the pre-flashes?

Any advise you can offer will be greatfully received. Thanks

Check to see if your D700 on-board Flash is set to Red Eye. Any on-board flash settings will effect your SB-800 as well. Since the D3X doesn't have a flash you wouldn't notice.

Red-eye reduction (and how to select it) is described on pages 185 and 188 in the D700 manual.

Now, Chris - You see the value of a membership with this group. I have yet to ask a question that someone like Brian Hasn't jumped up and provided a concise and accurate answer. In addition, this is a very polite group of people. I occasionally visit other web sites relating to photography in which people are snippy and have immense egos. Not here! So join us anbd fill out your profile. Knowing what you shoot with and what you shoot will help people answer questions! Welcome aboard in advance!

BTW, that PDF manual is downloadable and searchable!

Thank you gentlemen. I have filled out my profile. I have a website at www.christopherrimmer.com Most of my previous work was shot on 6 x 7 film. I am relatively new to the Digital world but I have found this forum most helpful. Of course, non of us know all there is to know about photography but I'mm willing to bet that the collective knowledge of this forum may be heading in that direction.
Cheers Chris
