"Will we see a sub $1000 D700 anytime soon?"

Morristown, US

I've been a D700 user for 3+ years ordering my camera when it was first announced. I'd like to get a 2nd FX body but can no longer afford $2000+ camera bodies due to age loss of income and semi retirement. Do you think we'll see a big, big drop in used prices anytime soon with the release of the D600?

Of course nobody will know for sure but I very much doubt that there will be a "big" price drop. The D700 will more likely fluctuate down over the years. It is still an excellent camera that photographers would have given an arm and a leg for a few years ago. Also, neither the D600 nor the D800 are 1:1 replacements of the D700, they are different model lines. The D700 is built like a tank and has better ergonomics than the D600, and it also has faster fps than the D800, especially with a grip. So I'm sure there will still be quite a bit of demand for the D700 and no supply other than on the used market. This should help with the value of the D700. Mine is certainly going nowhere.

I saw a D700 for $1100 on the local classifieds about two months ago. I wish i could have picked it up. That's the lowest i have seen. Most used are still $1700 or so. If i see one close to $1K it would be hard not to get it.

Not going to happen in 2012, and might not happen in 2013 either...the current going rate for a D700 is around $1800. The D600 is coming in at $2100. Used D600 bodies will likely go for $1900. This should push the D700 down to $1500 in the near future (within one year).

Eventually, it will hit $1000 though. But it probably won't be until at least mid 2014.

An undeniable paradox: To think that there is any such thing as an absolute rule is at worst naïve, and at best, shortsighted. There is no such thing as an always-true, all context- or situation-salient, absolute rule that always holds true…including this one!

I saw one on Craigs with some scuffing that was 1250. Didn't last a day. Most are asking 1700, which means 1600 or so... They'll get there, but who knows how soon?
