I am off for a photography workshop for 5 days and want to make sure that I have sufficient capacity CF cards with me for my D700 (will be shooting in NEF).

Currently I have Sandisk 8 Gb with speed of 60 mb/s

Planning to buy 16gb CF cards and want to know if there is any perceptible difference between 60 mb/s vs 30 mb/ s CF cards on the D 700 ?

Hi Nilesh,

The 60MB/sec. cards will clear the buffer a little faster than 30MB/sec. cards. They will also allow you to download the images on to your computer faster as well.
If you don't fill the buffer the difference in write speed doesn't matter. If you do fill the buffer, the faster cards will allow you to capture more images per unit time.

Hard to say ???

In five days I could shoot 5K pics if on the road.....and on a roll.

@ 20-30mb per pic in uncompressed NEF...they add up pretty quickly..

I carry 2 16 GB and 2 8 GB with me at all times...and I transfer then back up immediately every time when I'm shooting.

One pice of advice..don't get off brand or from unknown shopping locations..pay the extra $$$...

When traveling on a photo trip, I carry a laptop with at least two External USB Hard Drives. When traveling light (without a laptop) I carry memory cards with two or three times the capacity that I think I will need. On occasion, I have gotten close to running out of space even when packing triple the capacity that I thought I needed. Depending on where you are going, with few exceptions you should be able to purchase additional memory cards at your destination though the price will likely be higher.

Yes, I always have my Macbook air with a CF card reader in my backpack or at the hotel.

When I'm travelling and I do alot, I change out cards several times during the day to insure I don't loose a once in a lifetime shot.

My personal preference is more smaller (8gb) than larger 16GB cards and just keep moving them to the storage package...

Ipads (from what I've read and been told)...don't store NEF's well and you can loose some resolution (agai, have only read this but, not gotten proven info)..

They do make a travelling backup drives, e.g. CF card transfers, but, they are pricey....

Another alternative, is just do buy a cheap NET book computer that has 250G of space and use is as a backup machine if you don't have a mac..servers two purposes...net access and backup when travelling , and if you break it or gets stolen..you are only out $300 max...if you look on line, you can get refrubs in the $200+ range for older models...again, you are not going to run CS6 or lightroom...just nikon transfer and move stuff back off the CF card via a USB port.
