Well today I finally had the chance to do a real photograph. Theres an old barn down the street. Its about half collapsed now, and Ive been hoping I'd get some good clouds before it fell down. This afternoon a storm came up and put a near perfect cloud mass right benind the barn. The photo came out pretty good. My sister likes it too and wants to do a painting.

Now to figure out how to work with the software. I think the barn might be just a bit too bright with the late afternoon sun on it in front and the dark clouds behind.

Just wanted to share as there have been so many posts, both mine and from others, that I have scoured for pointers and ideas on how to use my wonderful new camera.

Thanks the more I learn about this camera the more I love it.

Have to figure out how to post a photo. Do I just put it in 'my gallery?

No software yet except what came with the camera. I bought Capture NX2 but long story about rebuilding a new computer until I can install it.

I thought maybe Id play a little with the in camera processing, but save the originals.

I have today mostly to myself so maybe I can get to the next step.

You can either post the photo in your gallery. Or, when you click on reply, you can "click here to choose your attachements" link. This is the window that opens when you click on choose your attachments.

Current upload number is 1 . Maximum number of uploads is 9 .
Step 1. Click on 'Browse...' button to choose your attachment file.
(maximum size allowed = 300 KBytes , max width = 1200 px , max height = 1200 px)

Step 2. Define your attachment type:

Step 3. Click on 'Upload File!' button to finish. The uploaded file name will automatically be added to the attachment textbox.

When you add the image/images as attachments to your message you are limited to a small file size vs when you upload them to your gallery.

Thanks for the interest. Long story just got them downloaded yesterday then found I couldnt post photos unless I was a paid member. I'll have to set that up then I'll post the pictures.

Now that I have your attention I hope they dont entirely disappoint. Im still in that what am I doing wrong phase. Part of it may be more camera setup, some may be lost technique. I think that though my heart was in the right place, trying to learn with manual lenses might be the problem. I may need at least one good auto lens to get me started.

Since you are just starting out with your camera and have Capture NX (although uninstalled as of yet) you may want to consider shooting NEF files rather than JPEG if you already are not shooting NEF's.
There is a world of things you can do with a NEF and Capture NX that cannot be done with a JPEG.
Download Nikon Transfer to move the pics from your camera to computer.

And with a NEF it captures every bit of data recorded andf can be edited without losing anything. Save a NEF as a JPEG then you can always go back to the NEF file and it is still there unchanged.
