After using the HDR feature on my iPhone 4s I am amazed how good the photos come out with such a small camera. I know that the process to take 3 shots with different exposures is called bracketing, but can i set my D700 to take those three shots automatically with one press of the release button? Then,can that feature be enabled by holding in the fn button when required?
I wonder when Nikon will have a automatic HDR on/0f switch as the new iPhones have. Lastly, is the processing of the 3 shots done in photoshop (I have C5)or is there another program needed?

Hi!

You can set your D700 to bracket automatically with the Fn button: press the button and use the wheels to select the sort of bracketing you want (0, +1, +2 or -1, 0, +1 for example) and the number of bracketed shots (up to 9, -4 to +1EV) and the EV interval, from .3 to 1EV between shots.

For the merging, CS5 can, but many people seem to favour Photomatix (I don't like its standard rendition), and there is also Picturenaut, which is bothe excellent and donation-ware.

Hi Olivier thanks for the info. You did not say if the three shots are taken with one press of the release button? I think this type of HDR needs each shot taken separately, probably best done with a tripod. The iPhone HDR is done in a fraction of a second unlike the procedure needed with my D700. I wonder how long it will be before camera makers have the auto HDR feature?

Just a thought....could that bracketing feature be combined with the ch button set to three shots activated by the fn button?

Nikon has implemented a simple, two exposure, HDR mode in the D5100, D800 and D4 with one push of the shutter. I have used it in the D5100 but wish it could be programmed for 3 or more exposures. But it's a start.

Actually, using the CH setting will indeed let the camera fire the 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 or 9 shots (maybe I add or forget some here ), if you keep the button depressed.

And the fact that a tripod is needed is also due to the weight of the mirror, which goes up and down at each image. We're speaking of a "huge" sensor, with a real obturator, not of the thumbnail-sized sensor of a smartphone!

Also, I do prefer the HDR done afterwards, because you can also intervene in the process!

I developed them in NX2 at the time (it was before my Lightroom days) and fed the resulting jpegs into Picturenaut.
