"LV Mode questions"

Seattle, US

I'm going to spend a week or so on the Oregon coast this summer shooting seascapes. I plan on using my D700 in LV/Tripod/Manual focus mode. The camera manual mentions that LV shuts off after 60 minutes to avoid overheating. My questions are:

Does the entire camera shut down or just LV?
How long does it take to recycle and LV becomes usable?

Thanks in advance for your comments,

Best regards,

Bob

FWIW...

I spoke with the regional Nikon sales rep yesterday and posed the same questions to her. While she has not dealt specifically with these issues she is fairly certain that:

Only LV shuts off and other camera functions are still usable.

Recycle time is probably governed by ambient temperature.

So it seems the best practice is to avoid extended periods of having LV engaged (shut it off between shots) and carry lots of spare batteries. I hope to test some of this in the next week or two....more to come.

Best regards,

Bob

Heat is considered to enhance noise. I try to minimize the time LiveView is on simply to avoid the possibility of heat buildup and the related potential noise on the sensor.

Astrophotographers, who leave sensors running for long periods, up to hours in one session, often chill their sensors with water and even exotic super-cooled liquids, all in order to reduce noise. Just to say this is a very real and well known effect of running a sensor for long periods.

I've never let it go 60 minutes so have no idea what happens at that point .
