"D700 with attached grip Resting Position"

Mullica Hill, US

Okay... This is probably a dumb question but here goes. When I have the battery grip on and I put the camera down, it rests on the lens at an angle. Is this okay? Will it damage the lens? Or anything else for that matter?

How do you set your D700 down when the battery grip is attached?

Sorry if this is elementary, but it it's weighing on my mind.

Thanks in advance!

John

John,

I lay mine down on the left side especially with a short lens mounted. That way you don't have such an acute angle on the hood and it's easy to pick up again with your right hand. Having said that, I would not leave the camera sitting on the grip and hood points for a long period of time. I do leave my cameras l laying on a padded table laying their left side. I cover them with a cloth to keep the dust in check. I like being ready at all times.

Hi John,

It depends on the lens that I have mounted on the camera at the time.
In addition to the MB-D10, I have a L-Bracket mounted so it adds a little more height.
With a 28-70mm or longer, I lay the camera down on the MB-D10 and fold my Neckstrap and place it under the lens for additional support.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

I have mounted always both, MB-10 and a L-Bracket, so I lay it down on the left side.

If the hood is a soft one, the weight will slowly and temporarily deform it.

If the lens is really short, the resting angle might be unstable and prone to falling, maybe.

I am certainly not worried about any damage due to the slight weight of the camera and grip.

Interesting how variations on this question come up here every once in a while! I've never thought about damaging anything with the camera at rest. My concern is my own periodic case of Butterfingers.-- I worry a lot more about dropping something than with how I put it down...

On the left side as well, with one exception: when I have a bigger lens mounted (80-200, 80-400), I have been known to put the camera for a short period on the lens hood, lens pointing down.

It's quite stable, actually, even with the MB-10! But I repeat that it is for short periods only, typically to answer a phone or blow my nose. The rest of the time, my kit is in a closet, with a "sub-kit" always ready to go!

Maybe a bean bag would alleviate the problem?

Thank you all for taking the time to answer... lots of good advice! Just love this forum for that... If I have to set it down, I'll give the left side a try.
