Hello everyone,

A of yesterday I am a new owner of a D700. Since 2006 I bought and then sold D80 -> D200 -> D300 (twice) and now I was finally able to get the Dream.

My story and question: I bought a refurbished D700 from a very reputable store for $1,979. I choose to go with a refurbished vs new ($2,200) based on the past experience I had with refurbished products (lenses only).

The camera has 29,000 shutter actuation, which I think is a little bit too much for a refurbished, and for the price? Other than that the camera looks like new, you won't see any difference.

Ok, it's supposed to be a short post, so here we go: do I keep the camera or return it?

I would return it. That is a used camera! A couple of hundred
activations would be alright but not that many.

What is the warranty for a refurbished vs new?
I agree with Jose, I would return it. I find it hard to believe a refurbished camera would have 29,000 actuations.

The warranty for a refurbished is 90 days. I think the new one has 1 year. But this is not a game changer for me. I know a 29k it's not a lot for a D700, but the price I paid I think is a little bit too much. If I knew the shutter actuation is 29k I would never buy it, period. The resale value will also be lower, in case I want to sale it later.

I'll wait until Tuesday when they re-open and try to speak with a manager, maybe I'll either get a good discount or just return it.

Price and mileage are far too high. I suggest you get a new specimen which is only slightly more expensive.

Here in Portugal, photographic equipmentt is extremly expensive.
When i was looking for an used D700, i wanted with less than 10k clicks, and i found one, used, with 8k, that cost me 1500€ (1877$ USD). The new ones cost 2400€ (3000$ USD). So i was lucky to find one LNIB for that price.
I know that 29k clicks that's not to much for a D700 (rated for 150k), but it does look to much to that range of price you payed.

if you decide to return and look for a used one, I have a d700 with less than 15000 clicks that I will be selling since i just got my d800. the camera will come with all original packing,extra battery and Markin L plate. I bought it new from local Nikon dealer. Let me know if you are interested.

I'd return it too. I just got a used one from Samy's here in Santa Barbara for $1600. 4000 clicks, looks brand new in box with all paperwork. I wouldn't pay much more than that.

29k isn't much for this camera, but the price you payed is to high. Return it and buy a new one.

If it works well, I'd ask for a price adjustment. 29K is barely broken in... It does seem deceptive to call it a refurb.

If you divide the price of a new D700 by the 150,000 cycle shutter life expectancy you get the cost per frame ($.01466) then multiply by 29,000 clicks the depreciation is $425.14 making the value of the camera $1773.86 which is a little more than $200.00 less than you paid not to mention the significantly reduced warranty period.

($2199.00 / 150,000 cycles = $0.01466 x 29000 = $425.14)
2199.00 - 425.14 = $1773.86
Given the numbers, I would return it and pay the $220.00 for a new one.

I agree.

I wouldn't even consider a used, or referbished body over a new one for such a little difference.

Longer warranty

New, unused, unabused...zero acutations.

Sometimes, the ghosts never leave...after a camera is dropped, or has a mechanical issue...etc.

Just my thoughts.

I'd return it and buy a new one...period.

I did call the store and asked for a discount due to a high 'mileage'. This unit was directly from Nikon and unfortunately Nikon does not allow authorized dealers to reduce the price. I do believe them, Nikon outlet sells the refurbished D700 for the exact same price.

It will go back and I will look to get a new one. I am in contact with a different store and hopefully by noon I'll have my order placed.
