"D7000 to D700 (D800E Pre-ordered) Question...."

Phoenix, US

I have a D7000 and have a D800E on pre-order. Just wondering what some of you would say about upgrading the D7K to the D700 as a second body along side a D800E... The D700 would give me the speed I give up with the D800E and maybe a little better low light (pixel level) performance... Also the D800E takes video which would cover what the D7K does.... What are some your peoples thoiughts on this????? Thx

Well the only disadvantage would be if you do a lot of wildlife photo's where the 1.5 factor of the DX camera comes to play. I don't do wildlife pictures, so yes The d700 would be a great back-up for the D800E. I have a D7000 and D700 now. Once the D800 becomes readily available, I plan to sell my D7000.

The way I figure it is once I go FX, then I will need to try and get closer to wildlife type shots and with the D800E, I could just crop down to the same 1.5 crop factor to get about the same results as a D7000... Thanks for the input though... Makes me feel I'm not alone on the D7K to D700 w/ D800(E) train....

A couple thoughts ...

Keep in mind that altough you can DX crop the D800 down to a near D7000 equivalent (in camera or in post), there will be a difference in how the subject appears in the viewfinder. With the D800, it will only cover the DX portion of the viewfinder. Some people prefer the larger view of a DX body for long lens wildlife.

If your getting the D700 to be the high fps part of a D700/D800 duo you should probably think of adding the MB-D10 grip. The fps of the D700 alone is 5 fps vs 4 for the D800. Add the grip to the D700 to go up to 8 fps. You might even consider a used D3. Same sensor as the D700 with 9 fps.

Yes I would grip the D700 and have thought about getting a used D3 for the Pro build quality and all.... And to be honest, for cropping, I would do it in post for sure and would use the D800 in 5:4 crop mode to get the 5 fps for wildlife shots. Also, I figure having a larger view finder will help frame the shots better and see focus better also. Thanks for the input, camera and DX lenses up for sale in For sale thread... Either way I look at it, I don't see the need for the D7K with a D800. Any other thoughts welcome...

My decision was based primarily on lenses I own or expect to own. I have an AF-S 300mm ED-IF f/4, which of course gives a 450mm perspective on my D7000. I wouldn't change it for any other combination. Super fast autofocus. I use a BushHawk shoulder mount and at 1/2000th of a second I don't care about VR. With my D700 I use the VR 28-300mm as my walk-around lens. The two together cover my wildlife photography needs within a reasonable budget.
