I've been learning to use my new D700 and the auto focus worked fine before. I would push the shutter release half way and hear a beep when it achieved focus, just as expected. Now it quit working. I'm totally new to photography and I've been learning about all the settings, so I think I inadvertently changed something to deactivate it. Can somebody give me some idea how to fix it? Thanks for your help.

Check to see if you accidentally bumped the AF-C, AF-S , MF switch next to the lens bayonet just above the FX symbol at the left of the camera (your right as you look at the front of the camera).
Just checked my D700, it is labled C, S, M. My optometrist did that accidentally, couldn't figure out why his AF-S lens stopped focusing, thought maybe the motor went out on his lens, ended up manually focusing it on his D200. The switch was just outside of the AF-S detent.

And, you might accidentally slide the switch on the lens to manual. I do that now that I am using a sling strap...in fact, it's happened more than I'd like. The first thing that I checked was the CSM leaver on the body...but it turns out that with the camera swinging on your hip, that the lens slides along your belt loops will move the lens switch to manual...and give you the same problem. Suddenly, no autofocus...
