"Slide duping - D700 or Epson V750"

There was some talk about using a D800 for slide duping vs a dedicated scanner. I thought I'd put together a quick comparison with my D700 so that you can see what I found. For the equipment I used see the description on the flicker link below. Before you start attacking me that this is not scientific enough and holds no merit, I feel it at least gives you an idea of what you might come up with. I don't have access to a Nikon 9000 scanner or a Hasselblad X1. I used what I had at my disposal. Looking at the physical slide with an 8x loupe, though, it appears that all the details are there.

The Epson V750 results took me about 8 minutes to get while the D700 took as long it took me to put the slide in the slot and press the shutter release.

Edit:
I noticed that Flickr doesn't allow the photos to be very big, so I uploaded the individual files to my gallery. Look under D700 vs V750.

The scanner seemed to clean up a lot of the dust/whatever. Is that automatic?

For what I want to do I think that rules out a scanner for me. What lens did you use for copying with the D700?

Thanks for posting these.

Some scanners have something called Digital ICE built in and can be set for all scans.

I've been using a D7000 with a macro lens, a jig to hold the slides and a soft box to provide the light. From the lens to the jig is a piece of black art foam that surrounds the lens and extends almost to the slide jog. This keeps stray light from entering the lens, especially light from the soft box which is pretty much aimed directly at the lens.

Within seconds I have an image from a slide and can easily shoot 150/hour. I then batch process them though Photoshop to clean (dust & scratches filter)them up and sharpen them, the equivalent of Digital ICE in the scanner. My results are as good or better than the scanner and I can accomplish in one hour what was taking me 8 hours with the scanner.

Then I load them into Lightroom and within minutes find all of the ones I want to keep!

For those examples I didn't use any dust removal at all. I was just pretty careful at cleaning the slide. I'm from the darkroom days so I'm pretty experienced at that. I don't use ICE or any other dust removal software. I just manually go in and remove it in Photoshop.

For the D700 slide shot, though, I didn't really care and just plopped it in the slide holder and shot.

The full equipment list that I used is on the flickr link I put in the original message, but it was a 50mm f/1.8 AF (not D).

Hope that helps.
