My wife was a little nervous when I told her about the D700. I instantly reassured her that I neither needed nor wanted one which seemed to put her at ease.

However I went on to explain that I thought her budding photographic skills were in desparate need of a D700 IMMEDIATELY.

If anyone has any helpful persuasive arguemenets in this direction they would be greatly appreciated.

This could work out - maybe a compromise will be that she agrees to take the d300 and let you break in the d700. I wish I could figure out how to give her my d200, she could give her d100 to the son-in-law...

Hi,

I'm always interested in what people write about their spouses and photography, especially when it comes to purchasing equipment. It really makes me wonder what percentage of photographers have to go through some sort of negotiation process in order make a purchase and how much of what I read is just light hearted fun.

I've been married for 27 years and during that time my wife and I have budgeted for an allowance for each of us (we each get the same amount). I use my allowance mostly for photography and computer related stuff. Sometimes I have to save for quite awhile to buy something (as is the case for the D700), but its worth it. This arrangement has worked well for us and I highly recommend it to others.

As a financial planner in my primary profession, your approach is an excellent one and part of a more extensive budgeting program and spousal financial integrity I recommend. Since money and financial disputes are the primary cause for marital discord, if each spouse has their own account for "discretionary" spending, and if it's structured within a well thought-out budget, it does wonder for maintaining marital stability.

However, depending on the dynamics of the specific relationship, if one spouse is willing to allow the other to control the financial "purse-strings" of the relationship (usually in exchange for control of some other marital dynamic), and not seek to subvert or manipulate the situation, it can work quite well, at least in the short term. Longer term the vast majority of individuals seek some sort of financial independence, even (and often particularly) from their own spouse. Having access to their own "discretionary" account, and to a larger extent, being part of an overall estate plan that provides for each partner's needs in a variety of situations, is very important to long term marital survival.

My origional post was very much tongue in cheek. I actually did say that to my wife (as a joke) and burst out laughing after. I shoot 95% macro and prefer the "crop factor" of the DX. As my wife just got a $3,000 pugmill for her pottery studio I imagine I could have a D700 if I really wanted it.

I actually built her a 42 cubic foot kiln with two 350,000 BTU burners. Along with the building it's in I could have gotten a D3 and a D700.

first tell her that you won't buy it untill you read alot of reviews to know if it worth the money or not, and that you may wait untill you be sure that the new body has no issues
Then when the camera is available to you, tell her that it is exceptional and its reviews are amazing, you can add that it gives much better skin tones and accurate exposures for making her portraits much better

When I first told my wife about the D300 she asked me how much it would cost. I told her "About seventeen..", and before I could say 'hundred' she exclaimed "Seventeen thousand dollars?".

Now I think I might be safe splurging on a D700 since it, too, is safely below the $17,000 mark! (600mm VR anyone?!)

Note: Before anyone begins to think my wife is naive, I'll say this: She knows how much I spent on our home theater equipment, so in her mind $17,000 didn't sound too far out of line with what I'm capable of spending on hobbies! She knows me all too well...

I enjoy reading about the different relationships and the banter back and forth between some husbands and wifes. I am very fortunate that my wife could care less what I spend on my photography hobby. Last fall she saw my D2Xs on the shelf and remarked oh another camera. My response was yes I have had it for over a year. She never asks and I never tell. What a great 38 years of marriage it has been. I am looking at the 600 f/4vr. For that purchase I may have to get permission for the first time ever.

My wife, generally, doesn't care what I spend on my hobbies as it is my money. We do, however, usually discuss purchases that are more than a few hundred dollars. A $3000 purchase warrants more discussion now that we are in a larger house with a new toddler and her working only part-time now.

I'll look forward to a 600mm when I'm 50! (It'll be a nice addition to my D900!)

I am going to have to ship the D700 to a friends house in Vegas where I don't have to pay the sales tax. Double shipping is cheaper then tax. Heck the plane ticket to pick it up is almost the same as the tax.

I hate to give a dime to the left wing undeserving should not have won the election lousy governor we have here in Washington (sorry for the political commentary).

Plus my wife might not notice the D300 changing into a D700 until she see sees double at an event when I have 2 camera's. Oops.

Main problem I see is my pal in Vegas just got a D300 and she might ship me her D300 and say that is what they sent and keep the D700. Just kidding if you are reading this.

Hmm. this plan totally seems flawed when I type it.

But, I will still be ordering the D700 later this month. And as one of the others say in a post above my wife will be getting a new Kiln real soon and a new building to put it in.

PS. I would be interested in the spec's for the home made kiln you referenced.

I said to my wife (with tongue firmly in cheek) that given how much she'd spent on sewing machines, sergers, and the like, I had some catching up to do. Unfortunately we can't afford my fully catching up all at once! So I've pre-ordered my D700, but I'll be pairing it with some used lenses for a little while (found a good quality 24-85 AFS fortunately).

Actually that may be an optimal strategy for me in the long run anyway, because much as I'd love a 24-70 f/2.8 I think a 24-105 f/4 (or thereabouts) would meet my needs just as well. Hopefully Nikon is planning on producing one in the reasonably near future...

I got it right the first time since I have the best wife possible. I have bought $20,000 worth of equipment with her "approval" over the years and she has "approved" a D700. She even "approved" a D3, but it was I that didn't want to spend that much money.

Oh To funny with the sewing machines and sergers. That was her last hobby. I now have a 10k 5 thread embroidery machine so I can make shirts for work.

We have a tit for tat spending relationship. But, she gets the better of me most of the time. I do get to spend money on computers and stuff.

Tell your wife that "immediately" means "2009".

The demand and pre-orders for the D700 is so high you won't be getting one this year anyway.

My dealer said if I pre order now, can get it for the first batch in August. But since I have D3 already, I guess I will have to wait n see how good is the camera. D300 is more better value for 2nd body (will sell my D2H for that)

At the time it was announced I told my wife about it. I said it's a bit too much for me trying to move from an entry level SLR. The ideal camera for me is the D300, but over the past few two weeks I tried explaining the difference about 1.6 crop factor and lenses. Was no good, only made it easier for her to fall asleep while I talk about it.
Anyway I gave her a promise that I will not be needing an upgrade at least for another 5 years if I get the D700. (She doesn't know about additional lenses) she always says Accessories …accessories..accessories…

I asked my wife if I could buy a D3 that someone was selling on this forum for a very good price. She asked how much, a couple thousand. I said a little bit more and she said no!

Seems like the only time I get to purchase electronics is when we have a child and that's not going to happen any more.

As long as I lust over only hot Nikon bodies; and not over some hot sweet-young-chicks, my wife does not care or skip a heart beat whether I am courting a hot D3 or a D700 body.

The only wall between me and a D3 or a D700 body is the few $$$ left in my pocket! After spending a heap of them on the D80 & the D300 plus 4 nikkor glass lenses!

Boys let me tell you it is no different on the female side. I want the D300 then saw the D700. I thought for what I do I like the crop factor. So maybe the D300. Heres the thing I promissed my Hubby after I bought the D80 I would not need a new camera for at least 5 years. Now I am drooling and hopping for a D90 that is like the D300 so I can use the extra equipment from the D80 like SD cards, wire remote so on. That way I wont feel so guilty. My husband just told me he is thinking about a new set of golf clubs. I see a possible deal coming. Married 34 years.

Take him out to lunch and then "golf club shopping". Then you can go home and order the camera.
