"D700 Lens Compatability"

A novice question to the better informed. I have a AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II and plan to buy a D700 body. Are all the lenses features, especially VR, compatible with the D700?

Yes. In fact, that particular lens was most likely designed with the D700 specifically in mind.

Absolutely! I have this combo and it is great. I love the 70-200 and it's my most used lens. You will love the D700. As for the lens, the VR works well but I find I use my tripod with this lens quite frequently so, the VR feature becomes something I don't use too much. That said,it works quite well at those times you can't get to your tripod. No matter which way you use it, you will love this lens. I would also recommend the TC-20E III teleconverter. It is simply fantastic with this lens. Good luck with the new rig.

Ron

Thanks for the advice, Ron. The two stop loss with the TC-20E III is worth the 400 mm reach but is there stress on the bayonet joints with the teleconverter added to length of the lens. Do you use anything other than the tripod mounting ring that is part of the 70-200 lens?

No, it is a terrible lens, being nice I will take that worthless clunker of a lens off your hands by trading a nice compact 18-105vr..

Seriously. The VRII version was a rework of the older highly respected 70-200VR1 2.8 that was a little dark in the corners on FX sized sensors. The new model, the VRII solved the coverage issue and used a new optical formula that surpassed the old one in sharpness, color and corner to corner coverage on FX. The 70-200 is one of the most desired lenses in the line up for its versatility, range and ruggedness. I use the older version as my main walking around lens and portrait lens on DX, over several high performance primes like the 85 1.4. It is that good.
