I hope so. I have the money for a D4 or D800, but can't justify dumping $6,000 on a camera. I am not a professional! I love the idea of a D800 compared to a D700 at similar prices. Now that the D700 will be expected to be $2,200 I will have to evaluate some more. I still think I will go the D800 route, but I am waiting on some hands on reviews. I have had the D200 since it was made available and see no reason why it won't work for me another 3 or 4 months.

It may not be worth that price. Until pricing and specs on the D400 are released it's impossible to know.

So far, locally, used D700 bodies with low shutter count are going for between $1800 and $1900. There are a lot of folks itching to upgrade to full frame, who cannot afford a $3000 camera. If the rumors are true that the entry level FX D600 will not support screw drive lenses, the D700 will still remain an attractive option especially to newbie full frame owners who do not have the resources to buy the newer gelded pro glass.

The funny thing is, if one holds onto one's D700 for 2-3 years, the next great camera body will come along and the D800 will become more affordable as well. Sometimes is pays to be a late adopter

This was quite a predictable decision:

A used D700 is on its way to $1,000.
I would not pay $2200 for a D700 when I can step up to a D800 for $800 more. That is just me.

Wow, that's too bad! You are probably going to go on record as the person who paid the most for a D700 and the one who took the biggest monetary loss, ever! I hope that you got some really good shots to justify paying such a high price.

Thanks for sharing. I used to feel bad about being the one who overpaid for things, but now I feel just a little bit better.

I think I will wait for the D 400 also before I jump at the $ 2199 price of the D 700. If the D 400 is $ 2,000, I would probably choose the D 700. Of course if the D 400 has an improved 16 mp ( D 7000 ) sensor it might be a harder decision.

I think you will see some of new technology that was introduced in the D4, only in a light version. Better focus, better high ISO performance, etc.

The price drop sounds interesting, but looking at Adorama and B&H, they don't have any D700's to sell, and haven't for a while now. Nikon can drop the price as much as they want, it doesn't cost them anything if they have no product to sell. Maybe its just a PR move as part of some bigger marketing plan.

Your right...no product...price doesn't matter. I bought my D700 in March, 2011 for $2195.00...just after the earthquake in Japan.

If I was looking at buying a D700 with old technology, or the D800 with all new technology...I'd spend the extra money.

Nikon may be dropping the price so that they can clear out inventory. Dropping the price will separate the D700 from the D800 price wise and attract buyers to the D700 as a deal. Otherwise, the D700 could just sit on the shelf as it's passed by as the D800 becomes available. The pricing at the release of the D800 was too close and not many would opt for 4 year old technology when they can get the best for only a few hundred more.
