Carry on taking images. It will still work unless Nikon has a small device inside that causes the camera to explode, that is remotely controlled, whilst I am taking a once in a lifetime image

I'll be keeping my current primary D700 as my new backup when, as, and if, the D800 (or whatever they call it) is available. My D700 backup which is nearing the end of its life might be fixed, according to the cost. It will definitely need a new shutter within the next month or so. It's on borrowed time now.

The question didn't specify if we 'buy' the new replacement. I don't think I would buy one, so I keep mine.

Keep it and hope I can get my hands on an 85mm f/1.4 AF-S lens. I will be happy that I finally have a DSLR that will satiate me for longer than 2 years

After going through the D-100, D-200, D-300, D-700 "just got to have" route, it will be a pleasant experience. Maybe I'll get another SB-900 and FlexTTL5.

I would like the ring flash too. Theres just way too many other NAS items to go for, unless this new beast can truly shoot black cats in a coal mine without flash or a tripod .

I'll still be using a D700 (and D300). I might pick up a used "D800" when it is kicked to the curb by a "D900" or whatever comes along another couple of generations down the line. At some point enough is enough technology in a camera body. For me, that is the D300 and D700 combo. I have no NAS when it comes to cameras .... but I am still losing to lens NAS ...

With a D3X as main body and the D700 as my second, I will send the D700 to Life Pixels to convert it as an FX Infra Red Camera when I get the D800 or D4.

If someone bought the new camera - whatever it is - then it follows that a newer and better printer would have to be bought to do the upgrade justice?

I will keep the D700, and add to the 25000 odd images I have already taken with it.

Any spare NAS cash will go towards a 400mm f/2.8 VR.

Kind regards

That would be sweet too. There are so many better things to invest in than a camera body that the typical person might not see a real difference in.

Not only will I not part with my D700, but I firmly intend not to buy the D800, or whatever it's called.

My desktop is perfectly able to handle the D700 and D300 files, as well as my LX3 ones, but it would probably suffer with 24 MP files. And my printing habits make it clear that I don't need so many pixels! At the risk of repeating myself, with cautious PP work (in Elements 2 at the time!!!) I got huge prints from portions of D70 (seven-oh) files... And ISO 3200 is really enough for me!

Spare cash will go in the direction of a better compact camera, such as the Fuji F100, or a second-hand medium-format film camera!

As many others, I will keep my D700 and constrain my NAS to lenses.

This raises another issue. Will some of the older lenses that members own be good enough to match the capabilities of any new camera?

I certainly think our newer lenses will be OK at 24mp on FX. This is only equivalent density to a D200 on DX. Now, the FX corners at 24mp could be a challenge, maybe more-so on wide angles than the tele end? You probably have a point here, for example the 70-200 VR1 will start to become more objectionable (even though I happily shot it for three years on my D700).

Anyhow, I voted "yes keep my D700" because I hope to get a D4 this go round and the D700 will serve as my 2nd FX body. I am assuming the D4 is going to be the high ISO king. Give me some time to digest the D4 though, and making certain assumptions about a D800, and I'll go into the sell column for the D700. This is all with the background that the D700 is by far the most wonderful camera I have ever owned and the images coming out of it are stupendous and it makes my DX images look silly if I look too closely

Certainly today's pro lenses will be great with the D700 replacement. After all, they work with the 24.5MP D3X. I see no problem.

I plan to keep my 700 and the 300 for backup and pass on the 800. Starting with the FG, I had to have the next Nikon right up to the F6. My passion for the next great Nikon has dimini shed. Maybe by the time the 800S/900/900S etc. etc. etc. my passion will retur .
Maybe this weekend I will put some batteries in the F5 and shoot a roll of the new Kodak color film .

If the new "Nikon D800" has the features and price that I would expect, it would probably prove to be too strong a force for my inner NAS to resist. As has been the case in the past, I would likely sell my current back-up (the D300). This time, however there is the added change of moving solely to full frame which would also allow me to sell an FX lens or two making the D800 purchase a reasonable easy choice pricewise.

I don't need a backup camera, so if I get a D800 I will sell my D700. Whether I upgrade will depend on what improvements the D800 offers. I don't need video, but 100% viewfinder coverage and even better high ISO performance would be welcome.

I'll probably keep it, I mean after all it will have little value. Once it's been replaced, I've read here and other forums that it will be useless, well maybe it will make a good doorstop, after all it's heavy enough

Howard, it will have value. It will still take some very good photos, and you will probably be able to sell it. There will be people looking for a bargain, looking to upgrade from older DSLRs, knowing the D700 is an excellent camera.

There are still folks out there successfully using much older cameras, like the D200 and the D70, and even the D1X and D1H.

I will keep my D700 as I did with my F5 ( which I still use a few times for the pleasure of using that camera).
Not thinking of upgrading mainly because I have no use for video - which I suspect the new D will have.

Well, I kind of am a gear head, but it still has to bring real change to my photography, especially when it's in that price league. It's sort of a relief to know that the changes coming up might not be so quantum as to tempt me to drop money on a new body.

It's also really comforting to have a body for several years, because it becomes a trusted friend. I like that feeling.

OTOH, we have always heard that 24MP=35mm film. So, if there is no loss in ISO performance and we have that kind of resolution, it might be tempting. I would want to see the results in real life first. Birders should love the ability to enlarge when they cannot get close. I am not a birder per se though.

Oh yes, I can entirely relate to that!

>OTOH, we have always heard that 24MP=35mm film.

Strangely, I remember reading that film was already equated by 10 to 12 MP, and left behind by 14 (that was at the time when the Kodak DCS-14n was the rave, in 2003, soooooo loooong ago ). And I have read in serious magazines that for some shooters, the D3x was an alternative to MF film... do I see an inflation here in the quality of film?

Olivier,

Yes, I know, but 24MP was the benchmark from days before 2MP cameras even hit the market. I do think we are learning that there is more to it than resolution and that lenses may in fact dumb that down to 10MP or so.

I guess I'm thinking more in terms of it being a brick wall limit for all but the very specialized need, assuming lenses could ever keep up with anything more than 24MP.

I voted to keep it because I have never been a collector of camera gear, rather only buying what I needed to do what I wanted. I had an F3HP with motor drive for about 20 years and when I moved to a digital DSLR is was a D200 until I found myself pushing the camera past its abilities to perform in the situations I was shooting in. It was then that I bought the d700 about 3 years ago. I have no burning desire to replace it, unless somehow Nikon figured out how to make it much lighter. I don't need video as many other tools would do a better job and I am not a regular video shooter. A 100% finder like my old F3 would be nice but it alone would not entice me to move up. 24 MP with better ISO performance maybe, but I am happy with the 12 MP images I produce now as I am not putting my images on billboards, nor am I a professional. So to get me to upgrade, would take far more features than I think the next body would contain. The lopsided results of this poll indicates that most of you, like me, are very satisfied with your D700.

I think it would be interesting to ask the same question of all the kind people above in a couple of years time.

I hope that I will still be using the D700 - I heartily agree with the term "friend" too.

I wonder how long it will be before we are able to shoot video from a digital body and then pull 12/16/24MP stills from the footage.

The ease of use of the D700 (and D90/F100) makes me feel enormous respect for those photographers who used to use manual focus/metering cameras, whilst producing beautiful stills.

Kind regards

unquote.

Frame rate 30 stills per second. Assuming 12MB then if you want to shoot a 1 minute movie then this would mean a card with a capacity in excess of 21,600 MB. Add in a buffering system to handle this in a camera that I assume you would want to hand hold then I think the next century will arrive first ahead of a camera that can do this.

I might be consider buying a new body if they fixed the over exposure issues with the D700 which is really apparent with the whitewater in waves doing surf photography. I thought there was something wrong with the camera when i first tried it out.

Assuming that your camera isn't malfunctioning then there isn't a problem with over exposure using the D700. Unless you can spot meter for the waves then ANY camera will show over exposure in the waves which are essentially highlights.

There would seem to be a number of previous post across this forum and he net regarding over exposure and the D700? My D200 never overexposed the surf to the extent of the D700. I have exposure compensation set to -0.7 pretty much 90% of the time.

No, I've seen no widespread criticism of the D700's matrix metering - and I read every post in this Forum

It may be a little different from the D200 - it's normal for different models to have slight variations in how the metering algorithms are configured. Your particular type of shooting needing -0.7 compensation doesn't mean there is a general problem. Another option might be to use Spot or Centre-weighted metering for these shots.

Those comments from others regarding overexposure are usually subjective. You can calibrate each meter mode in each bank (12 totally). I have all of mine set to -.7.

But then, I usually set my exposure compensation dial on my film cameras to -1 when I shot weddings, because I liked it much better that way. Maybe it was the camera's meter. I don't know. What I do know is that this is all highly subjective.

I do not own a D700 - so why I am replying?
A D700 will continue to take good A3 print size images for many years after it is discontinued
On the other hand digital progress is significant over a 5 year period - which is why in private sales bodies like the D200 and D2x struggle to make a quarter of their original new street price in private sales in the UK.
When the right time is to upgrade is a personal decision - but leaving it too long risks serious depreciation.

Photography is a bit like archery. A technically better camera, lens or arrow may not hit the target as often as it could if the photographer or archer does not practice enough.

I don't plan on getting rid of my D700, ever or until it breaks. I think Nikon has a problem replacing it. The camera is too perfect. I can't think of anything I would change, not even a more MP sensor. Anybody can take great pictures with it, like magic. To me this is the best camera, dollar for dollar, that Nikon ever made.

I would be tempted by superior ISO noise performance to the tune of 1 to 1.5 stops.outside of that my D700 is the perfect camera for me!

Of course! I remember saying that about my AE-1 about 17 years ago, too!

I am not the type who always needs the latest and greatest technology, so I'll keep my D700 as long as it works (same with my D300).

Not only will I keep my dearly loved D700, I'll buy another!

My clever plan:
Once the D800 is out there a while, more used D700's will hit the secondary market - selling at what $2K?
I'll sell my D90 and my DX lenses and buy a used but high quality D700 body.
Then I'll carry both FX's for portraits and weddings - no more mental confusion over settings and lens combos as I currently experience with one FX and one DX.

Any ideas on the price point for D800? $3,500 maybe?
I'm guessing its new sensor will skunk the D3.

Hi Greg,

I agree your plan is clever. Yes I'm thinking $3500 also. Nikon doesn't have to beat the 5Dii on price, it just has to be in the ballpark since we all know the Nikon will be a better camera than the Canon . So if the Nikon is $500 or $1000 more than the Canon that would be fine!

Interesting numbers on the survey 99 to 4! If Nikon is reading that number they will be quivering in their boots. I'm pretty sure though what's about to happen is a D800 is going to cause a second wave of DX to FX defections amongst Nikon owners and even other brand owners. It should be pretty exciting time for Nikon. The D800 ought to be the industry's best featured mid-price FX camera out there when it's released. Sure would be nice if Nikon paired a D800 with a D7000 sized offering as well. That would cause a hurricane storm of people converting to FX too.

I'm a birder, so I'll always have my DX cameras (and have you thought about the new CX mirrorless and what it might do for wildlife at a 2.7 crop?). If I wasn't a birder I'd go with a fully FX kit too.

I think that the D700 isn't the best candidate for conversion. The sensor would be a problem. The older D70 would possibly be better because it has a different sensor. I am not 100% sure about this so do a Google search for this topic.

"Poll question: What do you plan on doing with your D700 when its replacement is finally released?"

Same thing I did when the F3 "replaced" the F2. Just kept the F2 and watched the new models go by. 33 years went by before I added the D700. And I still keep the F2, and the F which preceded it. When I encounter a technical requirement which is not met by my present gear, only then will I consider improved gear to address it.

I learned back in the mid seventies that my challenges in photography are not addressed by mere technology. They are more along the lines of vision, seeing, and execution.

So far, the D700 has exceeded every hope and expectation I ever had for it. As mentioned up-thread, I wish new models came loaded with additional talent. New whirlygigs and bragging rights are a poor excuse to buy a new camera, IMO.

I just bought mine new in March...spent my D800 money after the flood hit Japan...got a new US body for $2150.00...just before the prices took off. Can't say I regret it one bit. So, I'm keeping mine.

I was out shooting some 911 memorial stuff and another Nikon shooter came up and asked me what I was shooting...he had a D7000...I told him that I was shooting a D700...and he told me that he'd sold his so he could buy his D7000 and now wished that he had his D700 back...and that he sure missed it.

I think that might be me if I let mine go now. I'm very familiar with it's format...as it's a follow on to the D200 and D300 technology...button wise...and I've had both prior to buying my D700. There's something to be said for familiarity.

When the D800 appears, I'll put a 1.4TC on the D700 and use that combo as an alternative to the D300 for low light action shooting.

Being that I cannot afford a new camera, I will do the only honorable thing left to do. I will go out in the back yard and fall on my sword. Wait a minute--I have neither a backyard nor a sword. Now THIS is a heck of a dilemma.

Now that the D4 specs have been leaked, I'm really drooling over that one. Assuming that the soon-to-be-release D4 low-light performance beats the current D3s by at least 1 stop, I will seriously consider selling my D700 to help cover the investment into a shiny new D4!

But if not, the chances are that I'll see a used D3s replace my D700 as my main body, and myt D700 become a backup/secondary body.

(Yeah, ignore my previous D400 comment - I don't need another DX).

Wow, amazing number (now 122 to 4)! I guess all those people hoping to pick up a good deal on a little-used D700 at a low price are going to be sorely disappointed. Incredible stat considering we are in the digital age and the sensor is the film. Clearly the D700 is a very good film.

Let's see what type of stat will develop on the D3 and D300 forum, should be very interesting.

The D3 poll is new and can be found here:

When the D800 is released, I will keep my D700…

I can't justify buying a replacement body when mine is working perfectly.

That said, I can justify buying a couple more lenses. I'm also considering getting the new V1.

Not too many here are asking if the D800 will feature video, which is the new trend. If it does, that will be the end of my DSLR NAS, since I have no plans to ever use a DSLR as a video camera.

I'll be patiently waiting for a good used D700 to appear at a decent bargain and promote it to my new backup, replacing my trusty D300. My gifted nephew gets the D300, since he already produces amazing shots with a 'mere' D80.

Well, I thought I would be holding on to my D700 a lot longer. Since acquiring my D3S, I felt it would be best to sell it rather than let it sit unused. It has been sold to a new Nikonian member that wanted to upgrade from a D90. I'm sure he'll be having a blast with it.

When the D700 replacement is announced, I will feel content knowing that my brand-new (Nov,2011) D700, which was most likely purchased just weeks before the new model is introduced, will represent a great value, considering the proposed new pricing for the replacement, and considering the amazing performance and stellar reputation that this camera has. What do I plan on doing with my D700? Why, enjoying it to its full potential, of course.....

D700 will go on the backup duties while the new model takes over...

If what I hear is right, the D800 will be resolution overkill so the D700 might still get a lot of use.

I am going to keep the D700.

Over the years, I have part exchanged bodies for newer models and I have always been disappointed. I have never got a good price for a used camera and I am sure that this would be no exception. After I have parted with a camera, I have regretted it.

The D700 does everyting so well that if it was improved upon, I would probably keep it as a backup. As a last resort, I would give it to a relative or friend.

Keep it for sure. I have been vulturing ebay and a couple of other trusted sites for used D700's. I am hoping the market is flooded in the next few months so I can get a good price. Two D700 bodies.... for me that will close to body perfection.

I will still be learning how to use the D700 to its fullest.I am having too much fun right now with the new V1 system to worry about it, but then again since I am getting on in years I might just keep spoiling myself and get them all, keep up to date with every new one just so I can say I have them, nawhhhh I think I will stick to the D700 and the V1 for now, thats enough for this busy old guy.I don't make money with photography, I do it for pure enjoyment and relaxation.I am not good enough for the cameras I have now.
