I set the camera up to do sequenced filenaming. First several hundred shots thru several different memory cards all was fine. I.e., all files were sequentially numbered starting with 0001. I was doing a boxing shoot last night and after changing memory cards (same cards as previously used and my practice is to format the card in camera when I insert it) the filename sequence jumped by several thousand. The last filename used on the first card was 0574 (which was correct) and the first filename sequence on the next card should have been 0575 but it appeared as 3760! The camera then continued naming the files sequentially from 3760. Anyone have a clue? Thanks, Tony

Check the exif information for the shutter count. Convert a few concerned NEF files to jpg first, then check tag 00A7.
My D700 has so many optional settings there may be one which affects new cards. Several notes on page 300 of the manual such as new file numbers are one higher than the largest number found in the directory. By glitch after format, perhaps this is what happened...camera 'thot' a high file number was found. (unacceptable scenario)
