"D700 Not shooting fast"

US

I've got the D700 and MB D10. a couple days ago I noticed that in CH mode I wasn't getting the frame rate I used to. CL is just as fast. I have reset the menu, messed with everything I could think of. Changed batteries in both units, even tried another MB d10 that is on myh D300.
I shoot Raw, and even tried seeing if just shooting basic jpg would do it, and it was the same. Any help would be great.

what kind of batteries are you using? You can get 8FPS with ENEL4a battery or 8 AA batteries with your MBD10

You have probably already checked these, but just in case:

-Setting a1: set to shutter release otherwise D700 may slow for focusing
-Setting d4: CL mode could be set as high as 7fps
- is your shutter speed fast enough?

The CH should be faster than CL even without the MB-D10. Maybe try that just to see. You could make it obvious by setting d4 to 1fps.

The 8fps is an "up to" promise, not a guaranteed result. A number of factors can tend to slow down the fps rate. Here are a few that come to mind, I'm sure others can add the ones I missed:

1. Make sure your battery order is set to MB-D10 first, then the EN-EL3e in the camera body.
2. The shutter speed must be sufficiently fast, I think a minimum of about 1/200 sec is the generally accepted number
3. Release mode must be in CH, and the maximum continuous release value in your menu needs to be set to at least 8fps (mine is set to 100).
4. Use single point AF for best results.
5. Don't use Auto ISO
6. Turn of Active D-Lighting

As pointed out in an earlier post, you need to be using the EN-EL4a or 8 AA batteries in the MB-D10 to achieve the 8 fps rate. Batteries should be freshly charged and at room temperature.

I'm sure I've forgotten some of the other factors, so hopefully someone else can provide the ones I've missed.

Hi Bob,

The minimum shutter speed is 1/250th sec. not 1/200th sec.
As Geoff suggested make sure Noise Reduction is Off and the ISO is set at ISO 800 or lower.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

From memory, High ISO noise reduction also slows it down, even if the actual ISO used is lower than the threshold at which it would actually do anything.

I have checked everything twice. Again CL shoots just as fast as CH no matter what I do. I know it should be faster in CH and has been up until recently, I do a lot of Equestrian jumping photos, so I know something is wrong. Thanks for all the replies and if there is something else please let me know

Have you tried another memory card? I know it is the buffer that limits the speed at first, but it starts writing imediately and a bad sector could cause an overall slowdown.

Can you clarify,
"Again CL shoots just as fast as CH no matter what I do."

In particular, if you set the CL speed (d4) to 1fps does this also slow down the CH speed. Alternatley, what happens if you set the CL speed to 7fps.

If this is the case, then it would seem the "Mode Dial" may be bad and is just not properly setting the camera to CH.

I was dreading the fact that the dial was bad, I have exercised it, but no change.
When setting to 1fps in CL shoots 1 frame, CH mode still shoots the same as it did before changing to 1fps.
When set to 7fps in CL shoots just as fast as in CH mode.

I can only come up with a couple more thoughts base upon the possibility that the MB-D10 is not fully recognized. You have probably already checked these, but just in case...

Does the LCD display show it is using the MB-D10 battery? Does the thumb button and other controls on the MB-D10 seem to be working properly? Does the fps increase at all with the MB-D10? Do you think you are getting the 5fps limit w/o the MB-D10?

That's about all I've got. After a menu reset the parameters should all be OK for full fps speed.

I read through your request and the responses quickly, so my idea may have already been suggested, but.....

Are you shooting in 14 Bit instead of 12 Bit?
On the D700, I believe that can cause a slow down in the capture rate due to the quantity of data being recorded.

I've tried another MB D10, as I said my D300 shoots faster. I've tried shooting in all modes, jpg, Raw, 12 and 14 bit, no difference, I think I'm going to be sending it off to Nikon since it is under warranty.

My thought was turning off the Active DL too and double check if you have any limits set on the ISO on the menu settings-both were slowing down my shooting speeds.

I don't use a grip so can't comment on that performance, however the D300 body only nativly shoot's at a higher frame rate than the D700. If memory serves correctly its 6 vs 5 fps respectivly.

I am a little confused with the statement from an earlier post, "When setting to 1fps in CL shoots 1 frame, CH mode still shoots the same as it did before changing to 1fps.
When set to 7fps in CL shoots just as fast as in CH mode."

CL set at the maximum frame rate would equal CH speed of the same frame rate.
Its also possible the camera's electronics are confused, such as a computer glitch's and needs to reboot. Try this camera reset technique, posted by another member sometime ago.

1. Hold down the two green buttons for 3 seconds. (normal camera reset)

2. Go into the Custom Settings menu (Pencil Icon) and click
Reset Custom Settings.

3. Turn the camera off
Remove the battery
turn switch ON
Hold down the shutter button for 20 seconds
Turn switch OFF
Replace the battery
Turn Camera ON

Ok what I mean is if I set the CL to 5fps, CL and CH are the same. If I set CL to 7FPS CH is slower.

I did your reset as you suggested no change

Rick,

I don't believe 12 vs. 14 RAW bit depth affects fps on the D700, although I believe this was true on the D300.

Perhaps as another diagnostic step, and to test whether or not the mode dial is part of the problem - the D700 gives us a "high" release rate in a bracketed sequence, even with the mode dial still set to "S".

Try a long sequence of bracketed shots, with the bracketed exposures (and light etc.) carefully contrived to avoid any of the possible slow-down side-effects mentioned above.

Edit: Obviously while pressing the Fn button (or its equivalent if you've reprogrammed it) to fire all bracketed shots with the one shutter-release.

Whether this delivers the faster release rate or not, it might add one more clue to your overall problem?

(I don't know about the D300 and I don't have an MB D10, so I can't vouch for all variations here.)

I set the camera to shoot a 9 bracket exposure, set to S mode and it only took one photo. I set to CL mode took the nine photos, set to CH and it took the nine photos and the same speed as CL.
I then took Bracketing off and set to S and fired the shutter with my finger as fast as I could and it was faster than holding down the shutter in CH mode.

Forgive me if I missed it, but you don't seem to have addressed some of the things raised in the replies here. In particular...

+ What battery is in the MB-D10?
You only get 8FPS with an EN-EL4, EN-EL4a or AA batteries, not with an EN-EL3e.

+ Have you turned off Auto ISO?
Having this feature turned on reduces the maximum frame rate.

+ Have you turned off Active D-Lighting?
Having this feature turned on also reduces the maximum frame rate.

I might have missed it, but I don't think you've confirmed the shutter speed you're using (1/250 or faster is required), or whether your battery order is set to MB-D10 first in your camera's menu. Have you checked those items yet?

Before you send it off to Nikon, you may want to consult their tech people. The phone number is 1-800-645-6687. Then select options 1, then 3. They have solved a couple of issues for me over the phone. It's a free shot.

Talked to Nikon, did everything that we did here, No change. I even put AA lithium's in the MB D10 and no change, and yes I changed the menu for it.

I'm going to send to Nikon in March, that's when I can be without it for a month and use my D300

Peace

When you send the D700 to Nikon Service, take some extra time writing a thorough but concise note detaling the problem and letting them know that you had a Nikon Tech troubleshoot the issue and they concur with your assessment. As evidenced by this thread, the exact nature of your problem can be tricky to describe and there are so many things that can effect the fps. One usually doesn't get a lot of communication from Nikon Service and the last thing you want is for the camera to come back after 4 weeks with a note about a menu setting because they mis-interpreted the issue.

Best of luck

Is the EN-EL4a a Nikon battery or "other" brand. I've noticed that some of the knock-offs are rated at less than the brand name Nikon's 2500mAh - as little as 2000mAh on some. They work, but not as well.

Try the lens as a manual focus type.

OK, have you tried taking the EN-ELa battery out of the D700 then attaching the MB-D10 grip with 8-AA or the EN-EL4a and see if you get the same fault using no battery in the camera body?
