"image overlay better than layers in photoshop"

Hi,

I read on page 359 of the D700 manual that image overlays done in camera are "noticeably better than overlays created in imaging applications". The manual continues to say that this is because raw data is used...Can someone explain why exactly the improvement say over layers in photoshop done with tiff data...

Can image overlays be used to create exposure blends of two images with a high dynamic range - one bracketed at -1 ev say, and 1 at +1 ev?

I think someone was standing over the manual writer with a pistol to his head when he typed that. In PS you can load one RAW over another with both converted to smart objects and get control that no in camera software could ever hope to match. Tiffs work but RAW/Smart Objects are more flexible for editing.

The answer to you second question yes. This thread contains a picture from my D700 with two exposures blended using a simple mask.

Through the judicious use of adjustment layers, no pixels were actually harmed in the processing of my shots..

I agree with you re the verstality of photoshop. I have used HDR and exposure blends in the past in photoshop so I know what can be achieved with PS, however I dont know how to use raw in photoshop...as far as i know, the images passed on to photoshop through camera raw, are actually tiff images which have been processed to tiff from nef by camera raw, and "given" to photoshop as a tiff...is there a way to work with raw directly in photoshop?

If you load them into PS from ACR using shift-click/open they load as smart objects, which are actually based on the RAW pixel file as adjusted in ACR. If you double click in the smart object's layer it takes you to ACR and you can do more adjustments in there to taste just for that layer.

You can also run smart filters on smart objects, which means you can re-adjust the effects on that layer at anytime.

This can be a really advantageous strategy in some cases

This is a composite that I just finished comprised of two shots. I shot the main scene and thirty minutes later shot the full moon. I imported both as smart objects, dragged the moon object into the scene and blended it in. I then double clicked on the moon layer which brought up ACR and I messed around with it some. This creates a separate side car file that is referenced to this smart object.

I would love to see someone do that with just the camera
