mine arrived yesterday

moved on from my first dslr the d300 which ide had 8 mounths

it was a great camera, but i wanted full frame.

cannot belive how bright and clear that viewfinder is

i wanted to use my lenses as they are ie 50=50mm

i prefer primes and do a lot of low light concerts

35mm f2

50mm f1.4

85mm f1.8

the 85mm was a real joy to use as was the camera

i tried ken rockwells settings and adapted them as i went along

this venues has a strong red cast and low power lights not the best place to start

any constuctive comments welcomed!

Pretty good shots, considering the very low light conditions. I used to have similar issues with strange color casts when shooting theatrical performances, which also make heavy use of all sorts of colored filters. Then I began to experiment with the Kelvin scale in the White Balance setting. If you shoot in a concert setting again, I recommend experimenting with the Kelvin scale and it might correct a lot of the color cast. To do so, access the White Balance setting and scroll down to the "K Choose color temp" setting. The highest setting is 10000 K and the lowest setting is 2500 K. Generally speaking, the lower the setting the better for theatrical and concert lighting. I recently photographed a play and the pix had odd color casts until I lowered the White Balance all the way down to 2500 on the K scale, then the pix looked very natural. Also, some of your concert pix appear to have some blown highlights, which perhaps could have been avoided if you had lowered the exposure compensation to -0.7 or perhaps even -0.1. I've noticed the D700 tends to overexpose and many are recommending setting the exposure compensation to -0.3 by default.

I quickly adjusted the white balance in Capture NX2 using a single neutral control point on the microphone - result is below (very compressed JPEG). With tricky lighting, I usually try to use control points in post, but if I can tell there won't be anything neutral coloured in the shot, I use a grey card - or even anything white/grey/black, to get a fix in a trial shot. The white balance can then be copied from the trial shot into the other photos. Either way, you can worry about white balance later, & focus on getting the shots you want at the time.

Happy shooting.
