"What's Missing From the D700?"

Now that many have discussed the feature set of the D700, which features are missing or lacking that you would like to see?

I'll start off by saying that I would like to have seen built-in GPS, perhaps similar to what the point-and-shoot Coolpix P6000 has. If Nikon can squeeze the basics of a GPS unit into a P6000, surely it would economically feasible for any of the DSLRs.

Maybe Nikon could offer a mini-SD card slot for options such as a GPS with a compass. Also, it would help to be able to set the clock in the camera from the GPS clock. I cannot get them closer than a second. JeffR

Mp3 player & Google Maps.

A tiny ir sensor so we could use the same elegant, small, cheap & simple ML-L3 Remote Control that my old D70 has. Same for the D300s. I hate carrying the bulky Phottix cr#p & hate Nikon every time I have to use that 10 pin thing receiver.

I have to say I cannot see the point of a gps inside a camera but it seems I am in the minority.

I’m pretty demanding when it comes to cameras and most of this is a gripes list:

1. Make the flash detachable so it has a smaller profile for street shooting. Omitting it totally would have been better but since this is a ‘features’ thread…

2. Please a a “1/focal length” option in auto iso! This way when you change lenses you don’t have to go all the way through the menu to change this. You can’t even make it an option in “my menu” - it is a serious annoyance.

3. Ability to set the aperture with the either scroll wheel while in A mode and similarly shutter speed for S

4. Make the metering mode dial easier to use and access.

5. Have a physical iso control like the 450D

6. Ability to re-order menu items

7. Ability to use self timer with mirror lockup OR make the exposure delay user defined. I cannot believe you can’t do this, 1 sec is not enough!

8. Ability to use the aperture rings on AF lenses rather than having to lock it and use the scroll wheel.

9. Anti-shake built into the body

10. 20MP. 12 is really on the bottom end.

11. 2 card slots (yeah I know, buy a D3 etc.)

12. Bigger viewfinder. It’s good as far as dslrs go but I’m used to my Mamiya 7’s viewfinder

13. Less squidgy d-pad and shutter release. They work well but feel bad.

The D700 does have an ISO button. You'll find it on top of the Shooting Mode Dial on the top left of the camera.

This feature is already there too - it's an option in Custom Setting f9

This still means it is a 2 handed operation but yeah, it is a minor annoyance.

GPS lets you add more context about the photo.

Sometimes when I'm traveling about, especially in an unfamiliar location whether it's in a big city or out in the sticks, I might not remember exactly where I shot a photo. After a few years, this may challenge one's memories.

Plus, some sites, such as flickr.com, let you specify where the photo was taken. It would simply be nice to document where photos were taken. GPS would automate that. Built-in GPS would make it simpler.

GPS - Would be nice, but only if it didn't add weight. There are some geotaggers out there, but I don't know if any support NEF files.

I wish that you could choose other cropping formats besides FX and DX. If there were a 4:3 format or square format for when DX lenses are mounted, you could get more than a 5.1mp image.

I miss the frame rate of my D2H and the buffer seems to fill a bit fast.

I agree with those who said they love the slick IR remote that worked with the D70.

I'm in the minority of people who enjoy having the pop-up flash. It works great for fill and there are many times when I just don't want to have to carry my camera with a bulky SB-800 attached.

I want Macro programming or the ability to combine the Shooting and Custom Setting menus, plus other shooting-related settings, into ONE "Shooting Situation" that I can call up on demand. I'd like to be able to store a minimum of 10 "Shooting Situations".

If I'm in shoot-from-the-hip mode (say, AF/S focus mode, Program exposure, ISO 800, CL motor) and want to shoot a 5-shot HDR series, here's what I have to do:

- Select # of shots in bracket.
- Select EV interval of bracket.
- Switch to Manual focus.
- Switch to Aperture Priority.
- Switch to ISO 200.
- Select MLU.
- Attach cable release to that d@mn 10-pin connector.
- Fire shutter 10 times.
- UNDO ALL OF THE ABOVE TO RETURN TO SHOOT-FROM-THE-HIP MODE so that i don't get that "Oh Cr@p" feeling when I realize I forgot that I'm still setup for MLU or bracketing.

Bracketing, Manual Focus, Aperture Priority, MLU, and doing multiple shots in MLU mode ALL require touching DIFFERENT things on the camera - NONE of them can be saved in the menu banks! How much programming would it take to put these settings in the menus? An hour's?

Thom Hogan's review of the D300 suggested that at a minimum we should be able to link a Shooting bank to a Custom Settings bank. But that still doesn't explain why Interval Timer settings belongs under one while Self-Timer settings are under the other.

I miss the ability to zoom by pressing the multi-selector button. I have this set on my D3 and it would be great to make both cameras operate the same way.

If I am not mistaken I think you can do this through custom setting F2. this allows you to zoom in while in playback through pressing the centre button. you also choose from the level ofzoom...

Sweet - I never bothered to go beyond the first level of that menu because it looked like press+zoom as opposed to zoom low/medium/high.

That made my day at least.

- very little

Photography is a bit like archery. A technically better camera, lens or arrow may not hit the target as often as it could if the photographer or archer does not practice enough.

I second that Len. Why not be thankful for what a great camera it is and not speculate about changes that could be made.

The OP never said that he did not liked the D700 as it is. What's wrong with suggesting additional features for the next model?

Don't you think that Nikon is doing exactly the same so to give us reasons to upgrade again sooner than later?

I made the original post.

I am very happy with my D700, and none of my comments were meant to express disappointment or dismay.

I had thought that the discussion would _merely_ solicit ideas on additional features that people would find nice to have. That's all!

Perhaps we'll see it in some future product.

Can anyone imagine a day that there is no room for ideas and improvements? The would be very creepy and sad!
