I received my D700 late Monday and I'm leaving early tomorrow AM for Las Vegas... attending AMVIV (A MINI Vacation In Vegas)... Yes, I'm a MINI driver.
Anyway, because of this and that, I really have not had a chance to sit down and study the D700. I have two batteries fully charged along with two eight gig cards and three lenses waiting to capture some light.
Is there a simple set up procedure that I could follow just to get things going? Do the cards need to be formatted? At the moment I would just like to shoot JPEG's, RAW will have to wait till I can read a bit more.
Yes I'm new to a DSLR coming from a camera in the phone it's quite intimidating... I know I'll figure it out but in time, which is not what I have a lot of now.

You must format the card. Put the card in, turn the camera on and push the "trash can" button (left of view finder) and mode button (behind shutter). When "FOR" shows up on the top left of the top viewfinder immediatly release both buttons and re-press both. FOR will show up where the # of pictures remaining is for a moment and you're formatted. Hold down the mode button and rotate the rear wheel until you see P on the top (program mode) and go take some pictures.
Do not settle for mediocrity. Rather strive for excellence for even in that attempt lies a measure of success.
P.S. Check the sensor for dust bunnies! Switch to M mode, set the Apperture to f/max (main dial - top right), focus on something (hold the release button 1/2 pressed), then point the lens to the clear sky (it can also be cloudy - never mind), press release to take an image.
Upload it to the PC and check for "dark spots". Also... it is better not to install the ViewNX and Nikon Transfer from the CD you received, but simply download and install their newest versions from here:
