Dear Nikonians - especially Don McVey

Dear Mr. McVey.....I'm sure you moaned "OH NO" when the D700 was announced.....BUT.....you've created a MONSTER with your spread sheets, along with a very loyal and enthusiastic fan base. Sooooo....when can we expect the D700 sheets? I'm only on page 178 of the 443 page user manual, and could use all the help I can get.

A photographer makes the picture....the gear only helps!

Well, it is a spreadsheet with all the custom settings of your body (Nikon's not yours ) which contains all the settings possible for the A B C D sets.
I discovered it for the D200. It's a very well made spreadsheet and a hard work for the Nikonian who created it.
The D200 spreadsheet cannot be used as is for the D700 but has to be customized. It's possible with a good knowledge of MS Excel and a lot of patience !

Where can we find this spreadsheet? I'm flexible with Excel and am curious to see this spreadsheet.

I haven't received my D700 yet, but when the availability of online manuals and guides and tutorials, I have never been better prepared.

Plus, I see that Nikon's manuals have improved a great deal. Anyone who has toiled over the D70's manual knows what I am referring to.

Here you go. DMV's version for the Nikon D300:

http://www.nikonians.org/dcfp/user_files/85767.zip

It would be tremendous help if you can create one for the D700, which isn't very different than the D300.

Now if you're ambitious, it would be great if you can have Excel transfer the settings automatically to my D700 (or read from the D700 into Excel). And while you're at it, replicate what Nikon Camera Control Pro can do.

Thanks!

I have built / remodelled a spreadsheet for the D700 - only does the custom settings at the moment. More will follow.

if anyone is interested in Proofing it - be my pleasure.

i have no idea how to upload it to this site. (I am a new member just joined today)

Hello,

Thanks for your post. I have followed up on this topic in a separate thread:

http://www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=226&topic_id=3655&mesg_id=3655&page=2

And Donald have posted the spread sheet on his website:

http://home.rochester.rr.com/menges/

and

http://home.rochester.rr.com/menges/D700%20Custom%20Settings.zip

My Excel knowledge is limited so any suggestions for improvement are more than welcome.

Enjoy.

Camera Control Pro provides for a method of loading a *.ncc file that was saved by any user of the software and it can be loaded into your camera if you have the software. There is a 30 day trial so you can load it without owing it. I posted a message earlier for anyone that is using the software.

I agree with you...much easier than a spreadsheet.

I also finished reading the D700 manual from front to back.
Some of it was like the old saying "went in one ear & kept right on going out the other". I fact i even went to sleep in the chair reading one part of it. It gives you the foundation if you can remember it all. Then if something comes up you can ask yourself "geeee, was that covered in the manual"? I did find a Help-Aid though. When i got my D100 & D70 cameras several years ago, i saw a training video on eBay for the particular cameras. So after fumbling thru the manual I again went back to eBay. Low & Behold there was the same guy selling training videos on the D700. So i got one. The set was 2 Disks each 90 minutes long. Called "Nikon D700 Made easy", by Elite Video. I've gone over the set twice & it actually sank in. I learned a whole lot more about the D700. Most all he covered on the Disks were also in the manual - hidden between all those pages.

Unfortunately not.

You may use Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 to edit camera settings, but I'm not aware of any other way to transfer all the settings at once. (Except for the in-camera "Save/load settings".)

I believe there is 3rd party software to remote control the D700 (and others), and this software might transfer the settings.

Happy shooting.

Hussam:

Thanks for your effort. In using the file, I have found a number of errors, mostly in the drop down lists, due to programing errors. for example in the size area and FX DX selections. Looking at the hidden rows and the Data Validation equations is helping a bit but my current knowledge of Excel is rusty and it is forcing me to update my knowledge of Excel. I have fixed some of them, but am still working on it. I would say the file is about 95% bug free. You must have spent a lot of time on it.

Thanks. Would you be more specific on the other errors (tab name, row number, etc). I found the Image Size / Image Area bug you were referring to. I just never use DX crop, that's why I missed it.

Thanks,

Hussam I will be traveling over the next few days, but I will try and put together a list of the things I have found so far. I would like to fix the image Size/Image area so that it would show the correct list depending on whether Dx is on or off, but have not put my head around that. Generally what I have found so far is in many of the lists, the total list shown in the hidden rows are not completely selected, so they don't show in the drop down list. I'll try and remember which ones I fixed already. A very nice job by you in any case.

Hi,
thanks for the Excel. It is an excellent tool but also a bit frustrating to use because of the errors and because of the reason that it is protected.

- Shooting Menu does not allow you to change the bank names because of the protection
- Custom Setting Menu/Preview button+dials does not have any selections and you cannot just type in the correct text because of the protection and verification

At least these two I found. There might be others but I left at this point...

Matti Remonen

Hi Matti,

Well, if protection is annoying you, feel free to fix it yourself. The password is obviously "D700" (without quotes).

The first point I have already fixed, but have not uploaded the Excel sheet anywhere - feel free to email for an update.

The 2nd item I'm unable to reproduce. Consider this, you must first assign the "Preview" button press before you can select from drop-down for "Preview button+dials". Okay, maybe it sucks, it's just that verification in Excel is very frustrating.

Thanks for the comments.

Thanks. And sorry for venting off. I had a bad day and on top of that started to fill the excel... I apologise.

Hi Hussam,
as much as I tried, I couldn't find but two new issues:
Both in Shooting Menu:
line 175 Shooting Mode: Drop-down box was pointing to wrong source range
line 193 Shooting Mode: Ditto

And you are totally correct with my #2 complaint: it's my bad, I was not following the manual.

Hussam,

I'm not sure I have followed the context of the entire thread but I know that your excel programming guide can be automatically loaded to any D700 from the Nikon software program 'camera control pro 2'. You can download a trial version (link below)

http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=61#Anchor-3

You startup the program, connect to your D700, select save setting (*.ncc) file to your desktop (or other localtion) and then you have a file with the settings as they are setup on your camera.

If you decide to use it I would really appreciate a copy of the *.ncc file. It can be emailed or posted.

Thanks for you good work.

Mike

Hussam sent me the D700 spreadsheet in exchange for my promise to try to get it up on-line and available to all. I've given it a shot. If I've done my html homework correctly, you should be able to download and save it from here.

(I've put it on my eBay About Me page. I hope that's okay. It's the only unlimited access webpage I have!)

This is my first try, and I'm still quite a beginner, so there are bound to be mistakes. If you find any (in the webpage or in the spreadsheet itself), in particular broken links, etc., please send me a PM so that I can try to fix it.

I hope it works!!! And in the meantime, many, many thanks to Hussam for doing all the work.

Enjoy getting ready to shoot those fireworks!!!

Hqasem and whomever else helped with this,

I just wanted to say thank you!

I just got my D700 in the mail today, so I'll try some of these settings for at least a good starting point.

I've ordered ByThom's d700 kit, and also the Nikonians "Mastering the D700" or whatever, so I should be up to speed with it in no time.

I'm coming from a D200, so I can't wait to use the D700!

thanks again for your time and help with this project.

Hi LaDonna -- I just downloaded both spreadsheets, and they seem to be working fine on my Mac. Many thanks to you and to Hussam.
