"LR 2.0 not reading D700 vertical NEF images"

Ramsey, US

Hi Folks,

Anyone else have a problem with LR2.0 not being able to read in D700 vertical 14 bit RAW images? I get an error (in CS3 as well), that the file format is not supported "The files appear to be unsupported or damaged". What is weird is that LR has no problem reading in horizontal images. I did install the new Nikon Codec and Camera Raw 4.5 on a Vista SP1 system.

Any ideas or a work around?

A quick test on a 12 bit vertical file and LR 2.0 was able to read it in. So it looks like 14 bit is the problem.

Hi! I had no problem with LR 2.0 reading 14 bit vertical images (turned in camera) recorded with lossless compression. Sorry not to have a workaround for you. I also use vista with SP1. best wishes.

Hi Folks,

Got some time to further test this. Turns out that Nikon's Picture Project was the problem. If I transfer using PP, vertical D700 RAW images 12 or 14 bit from the compact flash card to the hard drive, then neither LR 2.0 or CS3 can read them in.

If I read in the files via LR "from device" or use Vista SP1 to copy the files from the compact flash card to the hard drive (then import from disk). LR is able to read both in. Thus, confirming that Picture Project 1.7.6 is doing something to the file during the transfer step.

Hope this helps anyone else who ran into this.

Works fine with LR 2.0, although I did have to upgrade from LR 1.x in order to transfer images from card. No problems with orientation.
