"D700 FX here next month"

Is this true. Please see link below. It mentions 4 new lenses and 3 of which are PC lenses. That seem alot or is an important area. WHat about upgrading the 70-200, 80-400 and giving us a 24-105 or 28-105 for FX

If it's true.. I'm on it!

It does look a very good rumor to me... in sense of being a reality.
Does it mean Nikonians does have to create another category?
The FX bodies or the D700 ?

S, S Brass, S2,S2 BD, F, F Black, FTn, F36, F250 Black, F2 Black, F2A, F2AS Black, F3/T Champagne, F3/T Black, F3P, FG Black, F4e, F5, D2H, D200... Two Bessa R2S NHS!

Others take pictures, Nikon takes Life with you!

Although it is logical that Nikon comes out with a less expensive FX camera sooner or later, it is still a rumor. Until Nikon makes an official announcement . But a good one. I would love to finally have a decent view finder in a smaller body, like the F6. And when I need a bigger body, e.g. as a balance for the pro lenses or faster fps, I just install the battery pack.

Extra ordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

So, lets see what happens next month.

>Is this true.

Who knows...?

If it is true, then I'll be saving up for one! I would especially value the "fact" that it seems to accept the same MB-D10 grip as the D300.

By the way, the "new" Nikkors - three PC-E lenses and presumably the 60mm AF-S Micro - were already announced some time ago.

There are normally hoaxes at times like these and from my hazy memory - they can seem very convincing.

I find it odd that:

The Pentaprism looks rather small for a FF camera...
The rather slick cover for the cable release and flash sync from D3/D300 is not there...
The brochure for a D700 includes the new lenses - wouldn't they be announced separately...
The photos are so awful - this can cover up a multitude of sins. In the text some of the 7s in the "D700" don''t look quite right to me...
The printer/poster knows the RRSP - is this normally disclosed in the brochure - if not why not show that page? If not why tell the printer? It's unlikely Nikon yet know the launch price...
As the camera won't be available for several months - why the brochure now - did that happen with a the D3?..
As Brian notes the new lenses are not so new...
Why D700?..

I still think I'll get my D300 for my 50th next week....I'm not sure I can afford/justify to upgrade all my DX lenses

Cheers

A friend of mine saw a thread on dpreview that listed out a lot of specs similar to this. He said that Thom Hogan replied that it lined up with what he was hearing. They dropped the thread because of some NDA issue (presumably). He said it was to be out before the Olympics.

Cameras like the F/N80 showed that it is possible to have a "full-frame" pentaprism and a built-in flash in a relatively small housing

Please consider that the picture has been taken from an angle of about 40-60° (estimated), what compresses the proportions. If you straighten the brochure, you get something like this, which looks quite plausible .

I am happy with D3 which I have had for a month now. Standard zoom and Longer Nature zoom (200 or idealy up to 400) required now. Hope July brings this on.

For wildlife, consider the 200-400mm VR if you have the budget. There are alternatives if you don't.

And as mix of the D3 and D300, the price, at $4300 USD is way to close to a D3, i.e, it should be at least a $1,000 or more less. The $700 price differnce will be a joke to deep discounters who can probably deliver a grey D3 for about $3500-$3,750. Plus Canon's rough equivalent, i.e., a prosumer fx is only about $2,500.

If you read it carefully, its something that been written by guys from Forums...not from writer(s)intune with the Nikon way of presentation.

E.g quote from article,

"Colors remain well-saturated and accurate even in transition, contributing to imgae depth that is simply not possible with lesser cameras"

So Nikon are saying that all their other cameras are 'lesser'!

I find it hard to beleive that they will say that!

I just checked the D3 brochure and it also uses the text ' lesser cameras' in it?

Quote from D3 brochure......Imagine taking images at ISO 6400 that are as clean and noise free as those taken by 'lesser cameras' at ISO 800.....

So i really don't know what to make of all of it.

It could simply be a rehashed/edited D3 brochure.

Personally, I agree with your opinion. Actually, some of the buzz words/phrases can also be found in the press releases for some non-Nikon cameras by doing a quick search online (impeccably clean image files as an example), it implies that Expeed was introduced with the D3 (it is also in the D300), and breaks with Nikon's use of Lo-1 with equivalent in parentheses when referring to an ISO below a standard range. Actually, it states outright that the sensor is shared Nikon's flagship model as well (competing your new model against your flagship is not exactly the smartest approach). If this is for a new camera, Nikon should fire its marketing people. Since crumpling up a page though has often gone hand in hand with fakes in other markets (and some professions), I would assume it is most likely not real.

FWIW, rushing yet another pricey body out during a recession in the US would seem awfully aggressive. At least in Austin and Albuquerque, none of the higher priced bodies from any of the manufacturers seem to be moving very fast.

Stephen

In marketing, there is a very well used motto "eat your own children or someone else will eat them." We marketing professionals practice auto-cannibalization all the times because our competitors will gladly do it for us if we don't. Did you happen to notice that the D300 decimated the D2Xs when the D300 came out? The next D400 (or D700) should be positioned market-wise to take a big bite out of the D3 sales. And from a customer's point of view ... why not?

Does that mean that Nikon have stopped believing in photographers, my that is a different crowd to one I was used to. Still I got my film cameras if things go wrong.

Aah!

We all know a FX camera in smaller body will come from Nikon, we just don't know the timeframe.

I hope this rumor holds some water because the D3 is a bit pricey for a happy snapper like me, but I'd really love to have the big bright viewfinder, shallow DOF, large LCD and usable ISO beyond 100.

Not that there's any problem with ISO 100, but seems to me that only D3 delivers in this arena. I think I should be able to shoot ISO 200 or ISO 250 without worries and if I become very reckless even ISO 320.

Interesting not sure about it being here next month that's way too optimistic. This should be a model worth looking at if it exists though I guess it won't have much impact on the DX market, people in the main seem set on the advantages it brings and of course it would be interesting to know what the next DX model will be. DX or FX the markets are set it looks.

Figures, I just got my D300 on Thurday, but with an estimated price at 3300 or so, I probably wouldn't have the cash for a D700 anyway. I knew something was up when I was talking to a Nikon rep last month and asked him if I should hold off on getting a D300 because something better was coming and he avoided the question.

Maybe this is just a clever ruse by Nikon to throw people off the scent. Their marketing department quickly comes up with a bogus brochure for a camera that doesn't exist, while behind the scenes they are busy getting ready to release a 1DsMkIII killer and that being the D3x.

On Nikonrumours now they are saying there will be a major announcement now by a major SLR supplier, I hope it's a Nikon announcement and not Canon.

I'm suspicious. The 3 on a D300 would be easy to alter to a 7 in Photoshop, plus the suspect inclusion of a colour bar on the bottom of the brochure image.
Still, Nikon, prove me wrong.

MMMmmmhhh, sounds sensible to me

Anouncing a D3X and an improved D3 (sensor cleaning, larger buffer...) and leaking a possible D700 to put pressure on specs and price for competitors (like 5D MKII or 3D + 7D, Sony A900...). Also gives them time to fine tune the other rolling products knowing the others' hand.

We shall see... interesting times again and again

At first I thought all these rumours were some kind of joke, although the D700 brochures looked pretty convincing. The usual pictures are all fake of course. But now even the serious guys like Thom Hogan are beginning to predict that there will be an announcement by Nikon next week. This and the brochure could mean that something like the D700 can be real after all. He says there will be a series of new products. Could mean a D3x (no surprises there), a D90 (no surprise either), some new lenses and of course a D700 which would be a huge surprise! An SB-900, if it is real, is nice but no big deal I would say.
Don't know if Sony has anything to do with this but it seems to me like Sony's aggressive launches are shaking up the market. And when Nikon will announce a D700, Canon cannot hold still and will have to announce their 6D (which they must have coming somewhere this year) as well. An up to date affordable full frame camera in a 'normal' body is what many of us are looking for. If not for the ISO range, then at least for the wider angle and the knowledge that this will be a future proof camera/system.....well at least for a few months.
Start selling your DX lenses!

Now the question is "What do get for a wide angle zoom that takes filters for an FX camera?" I'd love a 14-24mm, but the lack of 'easy' filter capability is disheartening.

The Nikon 12-24mm is great, but it's also DX.

James,

I like my AF-S 17-35/2.8 very much. It takes 77 mm filters although they should be thin to avoid vignetting at 17 mm on D3.

Thank you for the suggestion.. That would be an excellent choice for a full frame sensor as a dual-purpose landscape with filters/photojournalism lens.

Looks like a hoax to me. Nikon (and all other camera manufacturers, for that matter) historically have released new models in somewhat sequential order (either backwards or forwards) that reflect the new model's feature set. To jump from a D300 to D700 does not make logical sense from a marketing point of view.

It's not a "jump". As has been pointed out previously, this rumoured new camera is not going to replace the D300. If it exists, it will be an addition to the range in the same way that Canon's 5D fits alongside the xxxD, xxD and 1D ranges.

That sounds reasonable, seeing that the "rumored" 5D MKII will be announced soon. This would be a nice place marker in between the D300 and D3, if Nikon chooses to go this route. I still remember everyone last winter being dead set sure of a spring time release with regards to the D90.

I agree. If the rumors and specs are correct, D700 is a totally different beast to D300 altogether and the price tag would show it.

Mayby the goal is to make a D1000 (MB-D10 as D1000) and they have to jump a few numbers.

Just a guess

Got to love rumor mills, they keep everything interesting. While yes I am saving for a D3 and, a D700 would be nice, Im not holding my breath. And yeah they need to move their butts to get a D80 replacement out. They are leaving their lower high end customers in the cold.

WOW! If this is the case, I am not buying anything new now except for the Nikon D3 if I had the money. I am really feeling the new format system of FX full frame. I own a D200, and was thinking about upgrading to the D300, but now I don't think so. No more DX cameras for me, FX is the way to go. And why a D700 number? If it is real, Nikon is not playing with the competition.

The pictures may be fake but the D700 is very real!!

On Nikonrumors you can see two pages of a German Magazine coming out tomorrow. Yes the picture is small but it looks very real. Tommorrow morning at around 6 AM (Central European Time and noon in Japan) Nikon will officially announce the D700.

Specs so far:

12Mp, 51 point AF, 95% viewfinder (bit dissapointing), 5 bps and 8 with MB-D10, sensorcleaning, flash built in. Selling for 2600 Euro's and should be available at the end of july so no time to save, just sell your car or whatever and get it!

Update: it's not small anymore, they just posted a readable page of the magazine.

No way I'm dumping a D300 (DX) for and FX no matter how good it is. DX has a serious advantage so a FX would only compliment my D300.

Yep. 847AM in Japan and no announcement yet, though it is still a bit early. No news in this morning's Nikkei news either.

Even though it is very tempting to believe this, I am still very skeptical as all the sources for this rumor are US or Europe-based. There has been a bit of a buzz on the web in Japan too, but nearly all the sites that I have seen are sourcing their information from the Nikon Rumor site or the German magazine. If those aren't accurate, then there just may not be any D700/SB900 announcements.

We'll see.

I stopped in my local camera store today and they are taking delivery on the 1st of July for the D700. What they indicated was that it was slower than the D300 but had higher specs for imagine quality . Suppose to sell for around $3,000.00 I'll keep the D 300 thank you.

Why would they ship a camera before announcing it? Do companies normally do this?

Hi Everyone:

Here is the link to Ken Rockwell's article on the “Nikon D700 – Fake or True?:" http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d700.htm and http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d700/200_9786-d700-1200.jpg

Is it just me, but does that rumored FX camera have a VR DX lens mounted on it? The only VR DX lens that I know is the 18-200. That lens seems to be the 24-120 VR. However, the 24-120 is not DX. If it is a DX lens, I do not think that Nikon will mount it on an FX camera.

Best regards,

Ramesses

Who cares?!? Am I the only one that is sick and tired of KR this, KR that, over at KR,..............

Look, if we wanted to read something KR has to say we'd be at his site and not here. His not let the facts get in the way articles don't even deserve getting mentioned here. Let's instead link to factual reviewers and actual Nikon sites.

Thank you.

Hi:

You missed the point. I just pointed out the “D700” photos that have been circulating throughout the internet – that is all. KR photos were handy. They show a camera with two lenses: I believe that one is the 24-120 VR and the other is the 18-200 DX VR. An FX camera with a DX lens?

Best regards,

Ramesses

The 18-200 version is a D300 with the 3 PS'd to 7 - obvious joke/fake and probably by KR himself.

The 24-120 version more recent and is probably from a French website - and is either the real thing or a more elaborate PS effort - bigger PP, DX badge and the new plugs for the sync sockets. It looks rather like a few others that have been floating around.

We'll find out today as the announc.

EDIT I still had sneaking feeling that Nikon are going to get the 24mp D3X and the D90 out first, but this link looks real enough, though I can't get it open!

Here goes - from the Nikon UK website. It is a beauty - and the publicity shots DO use the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4

The D700 extends Nikon’s range of FX format SLRs, incorporating groundbreaking technologies and performance into a discreetly-sized body. The highly sensitive 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor provides an (extendable) ISO range of 200 to 6400 and features a self-cleaning dust-reduction unit. Its EXPEED image processing engine enables the capture of images with superb detail and tonal gradation at up to 5 fps (8 fps with the optional MB-D10 battery pack and EN-EL4a battery). The advanced Scene Recognition System delivers superior exposures and is supported by Nikon’s acclaimed 51-point AF system, which offers outstanding tracking accuracy even in low light. The selectable Picture Controls streamline in-camera image processing, saving time in post-production, and a high definition 3-inch LCD screen supports two Live View modes plus an HDMI video output. Protected by a tough, environmentally-sealed magnesium alloy body, the D700 is a perfectly-balanced DSLR that can handle the unexpected, wherever your photography takes you.

Key Features

12.1 megapixel FX (full-frame) CMOS sensor with high signal-to-noise ratio, wide dynamic range, and built-in self-cleaning sensor unit that minimizes dust.
ISO 200 – 6400: extendable up to 25600 (equivalent) and down to ISO 100 (equivalent).
5fps continuous shooting (8fps with optional MB-D10 battery pack with lithium-ion battery EN-EL4a or 8 AA batteries).
EXPEED image processing engine with 14-bit A/D conversion and 16-bit image processing for superb detail and tonal gradation.
Advanced Scene Recognition System combines the camera’s metering and AF sensors for precise exposures and sharply defined images.
Multi-CAM3500FX 51-point AF system. Individually selectable or configurable in 9-point, 21-point and 51-point coverage settings.
Picture Controls streamline in-camera image processing by enabling the pre-set customization of image parameters such as sharpening, contrast, brightness, hue and saturation in various color modes.
920,000 dot 3-inch VGA LCD monitor with wide, 170-degree viewing angle.
Live View with Autofocus enables composition of images by use of the LCD monitor. Two modes are supported: Handheld or Tripod.
DX Crop Mode can be automatically enabled when a DX format lens is attached.
Quick response: approx. 40 ms shutter-lag.
Active D-Lighting enables superior high-contrast images by automatically applying tone compensation at the moment of capture.
HDMI video output interface enables connection to high-definition video systems.
Intuitive ergonomics with optimized button placement for fast and comfortable handling.
Durable Magnesium alloy body: moisture and dust resistant.
Wireless LAN and Ethernet support via optional Wireless Transmitter WT-4.

i can imagine the rumored d700 will have the same ability to detect a dx lens as a d3 and will automatically go dx when a dx lens is mounted.

I'm posting here because I didn't want to start a new thread before it's time, and this seems the most prominent thread about the NEW D700... but I was just wondering (mostly sincerely and a little cynically) if Nikon has "fixed" the "non-existent" according to them officially, dead battery issue before releasing the D700. I appreciate the need to stay ahead of the competition and also to maximize market penetration over the widest range of users by multi-faceting technology to increase profitably and return on investment... but I wonder if in their D700 boardroom meeting did someone suggest waiting until they resolved the DBS issue? And if we presume they are good corporate citizens and didn't release ANOTHER new product (ie. D300 and D3 after knowing of the D80's and D200's problems with DBS) because they resolved the cause with the D700, then can I presume they will now admit there is the existence of it, or at least advise those who experience it on other bodies as to how to fix it. Is that too much too expect? It will be interesting to see if it doesn't occur with this new camera, which could imply a corrective engineering since it occurred with their past 4 major cameras, as far as I am aware of, which would indicate a design shortcoming that progressed from one camera to the next.

I'm going to post more specifically in the DBS thread, but as the original poster of the issue on the D80 forum, having experienced the problem continuously, having been told off-the-record in Mar.2007 by the National Customer Service Mgr. that they did know about the problem back then "but imagine the scope of problems if we acknowledge it officially" to quote him, having bought the D300 and just last week gotten my first case of DBS with it... well, the release the D700 indirectly lends support to my feeling that Nikon, like most companies of today's era, is moderating its integrity with the need for bottom line profits. Listen, like one of the prominent posters wrote in the DBS thread, there's more to life than getting stressed about this problem, so in case anyone wants to jump all over me for my cynicism, I've long ago accepted that it comes with the camera so just live with it and enjoy the 95% of the camera that I love. I don't even keep up with the DBS threads because it's all been said and really it's not worth the time. It was just appropo timing that I got it again with my new D300 last week and woke up this morning to see an email from Nikon promoting their new D700. I sincerely hope they have fixed it for the sake of all of those who will go out and spend even more money on a new body and probably some new lenses. Who knows, maybe I'll wake up soon to an email from Nikon asking me to send my bodies in for a warranty repair to the DBS issue?

Respectfully,
Jim

Yes, I do think it's very likely that the D700 has the dead battery issue resolved.

But you're a little out-of date with the rest of your post - firmware updates were issued yesterday for the D300 and D3, both including a fix for DBS

Hopefully, an update for the D80 will be along shortly. In the meantime, here is the relevant thread in the D100/D200/D300 Forum.

Ahh, wonderful. Thank you very much for the notice to the upgrade; I didn't know. Glad to hear that they acknowledge the problem officially, and I encouragingly hope that this resolves it. Of interest is if it is a firmware adjustment, does that negate what apparently other Nikonians had demised as the solution to clean the contacts and seat the lens in securely? Anyway, good news and loading my firmware. Apologies to D700 keeners if I diverged on this thread.

Cheers,
Jim
