From that it looks as if the 'L' plates that fit the D300 have a decent chance to fit the D700.

Shoot nature with respect and don't trample it or startle its inhabitants.

Supposedly the D300 is 2.9 inches deep and the D700 is 3.0".

So how would the D700 look like from the side with a MB-D10 mounted on. Wouldernt there be a gap in the grip because the D700 is thicker.

The sizes compair if you add about three mm to the bottom of the D700 except for the high flash. Which in my estimation was raised to clear a short lens with a 77 mm hood

As prior posts have discussed, the D300 L-Plate will not "properly fit" the D700. Both Kirk and RRS have newly designed ones for the D700 body only, although the current L-Plate for the MB-D10 will work for either. Here are the appropriate links:
