"Shot with a D700...But !!!"

Perth, AU

Played with a D700 in the store! - Impressive! - I took my old faithful AF20-35 f/2.8 lens and a CF card and they allowed me to use those on their demo D700. So I did few test shots. I specially wanted to see how my 20-35 would perform and whether it would show any significant colour fringing!

Came home, transferred the files (Out of habit I shot only RAW -which was my mistake)to the computer .....heck... Capture NX (version 1.3.4 -the latest update) Or PS CS3 (ACR latest version) cannot open those RAW files. Bridge can only show them as thumbnails

I expect Adobe to fix the issue quickly. But is Nikon going to force D700 users to buy Capture NX -2?

Or is this a problem only I've had??
____________________________________________________________________________________

BTW, I mounted the lens on their demo D3: I feel D3 AF has bit more fizz compared to D700. 20-35 being a 'screw driven' lens that's understandable. I never bothered to check an AF-S lens!

Dinil

View NX (free) opens the D700's NEF file and save it in the usual tiff, jpeg formats
So let's see those pictures

If you open NEF file binary and overwrite D700 to D3, you can open and convert image by NX1.3, I tried it. There is a possibility of unwanted manner in some processing steps of course, but I didn't take notice of anything. I think it could be good method for the first play with D700.

Hi,

You are replacing 4 characters with 2. What should you enter as the other 2 characters and should they be before or after D3?

Thanks,
Randy

I replaced 44 37 30 30 by 44 33 00 00 (hexadecimal). By other words ... you replace "D700" by "D3" + 2* ascii null

It is posted on several reviews and other comparisons, including on this site, that you will need Capture NX2 to open the files without modification. 3rd party vendors will certainly have updates in short order.
