"D700 Menu Items and Settings Spreadsheet"

Colorado Springs, US

Here is a spreadsheet for keeping track of the menu item settings in your D700.

I started with the D3 spreadsheet (thanks guys!)

1) It is color coded to match your menu's color codings in the LCD.

2) It is formatted for printing (portrait orientation).

3) It indicates which menu items are saved and restored using the "Save/load configuration" feature of the D700 (I have not tested this yet).

4) It is password protected, the password is in the notes section.

5) It reflects firmware 1.01

As I just got my D700 today, I would really like to see someone with some experience with the D700 post their settings. I was going to use the settings from my D200, but the images came out pretty bad - so I have reset the menus and started over.

I think that there are some typos in the spreadsheet. I don't have my D700 yet to check, but some of the e and f settings in the custom settings in the spreadsheet do not quite match what I see in the D700 manual I downloaded from Nikon.

Very useful spreadsheet. Thanks Chris.

>New to Nikonians. Just bought new D700. Use MacBook Pro 10.5.7. Hoping to connect camera to laptop and laptop to printer allowing simple set-up at a function whereby guests can wait their turn, pose for a photo, see the image right away on laptop, and if desired i could print copy immediately.
Appreciate thoughts and guidance.
Up until now only used iPhoto Software and loaded images at end of session into computer.
Thanks

You might want to post this as its own thread in the D700 group; to get a response. This thread is for discusing the use of the Settings Spreadsheet.

You might want to ask this question in one of the forums in the "Master your tools" section forums about image processing of computer hardware.

You are going to need additional software like Nikon's Camera Control Pro 2 or Bibble Labs Bibble Pro.

csgaraglino,

Thanks for compiling this handy spreadsheet. I bought the D700 immediately after it was introduced, and will use this to document all of my settings.

I think there is a way to copy camera setting to/from the camera, but I must revisit the manuals to read up on this. If that is true, I could share those settings files with anyone interested.

I am a newby on this site, but quite familiar with both my D700, and the D200. I uploaded a recent favorite, as example of what this camera can do.

Thanks,
Theo

This was created with Office 2007 for Windows, but I have it running on 2007 for the MAC?

If I had to guess I think it could be something do with the way MS is "protecting" the document. It is only protected to keep accidental edits from corrupting the cells. I do provide the password so that those that want to edit it they can.

Try this one, it has all protection turned off.

Chris,

I have downloaded your D700 spreadsheet sometime ago. That spreadsheet was last updated on March 25, 2009. Is there a more current version?

Thanks,

I was doing a search for a settings/setup guide for the D700 and came across this guide from www.outthereimages.com. It covers landscape, portraits, action and point and shoot.

I've attached the pdf file but here's the link to the pdf at the website. www.outthereimages.com/images/D700_Setup_Guide.pdf

Out There Images is Mike Hagen's website. Mike is the author of the NikoniansPress book, "The Nikon Creative Lighting System." Mike is also an Instructor for the Nikonians Workshops. If you get a chance to take one of his workshops, do it!

I attended his Philadelphia workshop on the D700 this past summer, and will take others when available.

Thank you for that Cathy. I had already printed off the spread sheets from before, but from the site you listed I was able to download the binary file to my computer.

Thank you for both doing this and coming up with the idea. There are so many settings and I am so visual it is great to have them all in the same place. This will prove to be amazingly useful.

If you do not have MS Office for Mac I suggest you download the free NeoOffice.app here: http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/patchmirrors.php?file=NeoOffice-3.0.2-Patch-1-Intel.dmg&patchcheck=

I have been very happy with this software and use it for the settings spreadsheet as well as other MS Office files sent to me.

Good luck.

I'm very new to this so forgive what may be a simple question....I have downloaded the excel spreadsheet for custom user settings. I also searched the internet and found directions for downloading and installing a new bin. file for the D700 user settings (and how to set it back) but can't locate the bin. file to download. Can you help?

Hi "csgaraglino" and thanks for sharing!

I took the opportunity to modify the spread sheet slightly to fit my needs before entering the values I am using at the moment. However, I am still adjusting the picture controls since I only had my D700 for a couple of weeks now ... I've attached "my" version to this post.

... and any comments are welcome!

I have set up numerous settings in banks and everytime I make so many changes on the fly that I mess them all up. I know how to load them back but my question is "are these banks really being used" It seems that I start with something generic and then modify to fit my shooting circumstances.

Since I shoot raw and use Lightroom and not Capture NX, many of the camera settings are not even being used in Lightroom.

Would appreciate your opinion as to the real usefulness of these bank settings.

Thanks.

Is there anyone out there that can help me with this menu bank setting question? Is anyone really using this feature? If so, can you share some ideas as to how you cope with making adjustments, messing up your settings and then remembering to bring it back to your default setting? I know that you can reload the settings from a CF card but that seems like an extra task that will be easily forgotten.

Thanks for any assistance and advice.

Haven't gotten any responses to my request for help with the use of the menu settings. I'm still hoping that someone will come across this post and be able to offer some advice as to how to best use them.

The "My Menu's" section seems very helpful and I am using that. I just adjust the settings as I need to make changes based on the images that I am shooting. In that way, I don't forget that changes have been made to banks that had been previously set up.

I also use Lightroom to process my images and I shoot in RAW. I think that eliminates many of the picture control features in the camera so my actual number of adjustments are much less than a person processing with NX2 or shooting in jpeg.

Any input would be helpful.

Regards,

Lance

Lance, I presume you still have no response. You post brings up several question as opposed to answers. The banks (I assuming you are referring to "Custom Setting Banks A, B, C, & D on the D700) are very cool, but are useful in very (VERY) specific circumstances. The beauty of a Photo System like the D700 is not only what you can control, but how fast you can get to that control. With that said, there are too many options to have buttons associated with, hence menus. The last couple of statements are the key here. With the D700 you can adapt quickly while on a shoot. Take that one step further, say you shoot often, then use the banks to configure the D700 for shooting . That needs to be something (I know, reusing the word, sorry), that is consistent in conditions that your settings would affect. In other words, you determine your setting and then don't change them!!!

Now to talk out of the other side of my mouth. Say you have a bank that is close to what you think you need. Call it up, adjust as necessary, enjoy the shoot, but do not try to save the settings.

Your banks are your base settings that you start with. Ideally, that base is right on the mark for your type of shoot. If your assignments are varied and general, then you probably would be better off taking notes and at most using the banks for lens & post processing combinations.

I have downloaded the mentioned speadsheet, but that is exactly what would come in handy.

Regarding the D700 (raw) & Lightroom (LR). Your experience is just the opposite of mine. I'm actually pretty happy with LR2. At least I know how to use it a little. One problem I've had, is that when I load an image, it looks good, but then after "generating higher quality image" it doesn't look good. I since learned that the first image, was the jpeg rendering included in the raw file. The final rendition was Adobe's raw conversion. You will see numerous complaints if you search the net, to the point, there are several beta camera profiles available to help. By the way LR3 does do a much better job. To really see the effects. When you get a chance, shoot RAW+JPEG. Download a trial copy of Capture NX2 and LR3, or use your current version. Use Capture NX2 (w/ Nikon Transfer) to copy the images to your system in some directory. Then use LR to import your images. Check your LR settings, depending it will only import the RAW, which is ok, but you can also import both Raw & Jpeg, like with the Nikon Transfer. Pull up the four images. Ray & Jpeg in both Capture NX2 and LR. As the images become more challenging (low light, white balance, etc), you will start to see a major difference between NX2 (Raw & Jpeg) and LR jpeg vs the LR Raw. In my case, I wouldn't let anyone see my raw images. They were way too off.

Because of this, I actually purchased Capture NX2 last week. Have no idea how to use it. After all the reviews, it basically boils down to, Capture NX2, is the best RAW converter for Nikon RAW files, and an excellent editor. Everything else, well lets just say, nobody has anything good to say about the rest.

I hope some of the above was kind of helpful.

Thanks, Cliff

HI Cliff,

I just saw your reply to my menu questions. Not sure how I missed it previously.

Couple of things:

Once you change a custom menu bank, it is changed and saved. I think that is a major flaw in that you can't make temporary changes and then revert back to your standard settings. To my knowledge, I believe the only way you get back to your personal settings is to save them on a card and reload them. That's a pain.

Regarding Lightroom, I think I may not have been clear. What I was saying is that when you shoot in raw, virtually all of the camera settings (other than exposure and white balance) are not read by Lightroom. I understand this and use the special profiles that Adobe developed or some special ones that I did to cope with that situation. Capture NX will read the camera settings in raw and thus does give you a closer raw image to what you had set in the camera. Lightroom has so many other features that it makes my image processing and filing so much easier.

Have a Happy Holiday.

I am new to the D700 & Nikonians. This whole string has been extremely useful. I was considering posting a question to do with NX2 vs Aperture 3 versus Lightroom 3 as I am less than clear about what is best (I'm a Mac user): compatibility with Nikon or Mac versus industry standard Lightroom? So Cliff your comments were particularly apt. I suspect I'm heading down the NX2 route to capture the camera inputs with Lightroom 3 to finish the job. I will keep following the advice on camera control settings. Thanks to all.
Iain

Hi Cliff,
So if I understand you correctly, you use Capture NX2 to convert your RAW images from the D700. Then you import these converted images into LR to process. Do I have that right?

the one from sandernorthd seems quite interesting. a few posts above...

would love to find the bin file to upload...

what I found is that you can save the settings on your memory card without affecting the photos you are taking, the space used is only a few MB, so you can always re load them back from your memory card... simply have a copy saved for backup on your PC/Mac

Welcome to Nikonians!

There aren't many steps...

First, ensure that the camera has a CF card in the slot. It's a good idea to use a separate card for this purpose, so that the saved settings aren't lost when the card is formatted. Then, go to the Setup Menu and select Save/load Settings. On the next screen, select Save settings< and press the [b>OK button. That's it! The card will now contain a file called NCSETUP4.

Hi :

Thanks for the link. I have downloaded the excel sheet. Now, how do it export the data from the excel sheet to the camera? or should i key the menu entries manually and save them to a memory card. Please advice.

Chris, this is a long thread so I must have missed it, but has the file been updated for firmware 1.02?

Thanks,

Tom

Maybe someone can answer this question for me on file size. I have my d700 settings, set -they are set for raw, fx format. Why are some files 14 mb and some 24 mb or larger? I have gone through my setting several times can't see that I have changed any settings. I am under the assumption that differance is light...more light or brighter shot = bigger file???? Please respond if you have any insights.
Cheers

You are probably using file compression. The size of the files will vary with the amount of detail in your photos. If you are seeing large differences in the file sizes, you may have the compression set to lossy (some data is discarded to get more compression).

Thank you, I do have the compression set to uncompressed. It is very weird; I keep going through the menu. Raw, fx format, uncompressed. Load them into Adobe Bridge and convert them into dng files. I am going to shoot some pictures in the snow tomorrow when it very bright out. I could be missing something???? I don’t think so. It there not more data recorded in the brighter side (right) of the histogram? I am stumped! And sure the camera is set correctly. After I post this,I’m going to look through some resent files to see if there is a difference.
Thanks
Dewy

Has anyone thought about creating this as a Google Doc so that we can share and edit regardless of what version of Office everyone has? Then we can continually share and make copies to edit for ourselves. I can do this if people would be interested.

I just purchased a used D700 and can't wait to play and I'm sure this will help a lot.
