"Custom Picture Control Modes Posted for D700"

Auburn, US

After reading another forum post in the D300 board I decided to try some of the custom picture control modes that you can download. I found on the nikon Canada site (http://nikonimglib.com/opc/) that you can already download the D700 picture control files?

The thing I had the hardest time with is finding a place where I could actually download these modes. Everyone talks about the D2x Mode1, 2, 3, but no one says where you can download them.

Anyway, I downloaded a few to try, but my question I guess is more a D300/D700 overall question about the modes... are these only applied to jpg's? If I am shooting RAW and that's it, do these do me no good at all? That is what another post was saying, but I can't understand why the d-light and pic control modes don't apply to raw?

I went from the D2X to the D300 (via an old D100) and have had a little trouble getting colors I like with the D300, and I assume the D700 will be similar, but Nikon does have them posted for the D700 already.

I am shooting my first wedding in a few weeks and just wanted to get some of these modes pinned down for skin tone, but I also plan on using them in my D700 when it arrives. Thanks, Scott

Unless I am mistaken, these picture control modes ARE applied to the RAW data. However, unless you are using View NX or Capture NX, the settings for these profiles will be lost in the RAW conversion. In other words, ACR won't "see" these settings, while View NX or Capture NX will show them as the "as shot" conditions and convert accordingly. This applies to the tone curve, sharpening, etc.

huh, well that stinks for those of us using ACR. So what would be the proceedure for moving these raw's with the settings to a DNG? I use adobe dng converter to move from nef's to dng's but want to keep the pic profiles too. Guess I will need to ask over in the post editing forum.

I continued this post over in the postprocessing and workflow forum, but my initial tests and finding are yes, you are correct, ACR or Bridge, they both strip the Picture control off the RAW image as soon as you open the file.

That really stinks, but explains why my colors have not been what I wanted. In order to keep the PC on the file, as far as I can tell, you have to open it in ACR.
