I just picked mine up last week, & it came with both. It seems to gobble up battery life pretty quick (I was shooting in JPeg Fine), so I would recommend buying a second battery. I did, and have already found it helpful. You are going to love this camera! All I can say is WOW!!! This is what a camera should be!!! Enjoy Ron
It seems to gobble up batteries only for a while. The more you recharge the battery the longer it starts every time. The first two times I charged my battery it seemed to get empty pretty fast. By the third time I exhausted it and recharged it, the battery lasted longer.
These batteries apparently like being topped off, so you should recharge them often. You'll see the difference soon...
When you first use a new D700, the EN-EL3e battery needs to charge the internal back-up battery. Coupled with the natural desire to play around with the camera and the need to go through a couple of charge cycles before the EN-EL3e performs at its best, this means the battery life seems poor at first. It will get better
