"Ok, I'm caught in a dilemma..."

San Jose, US

Kumasta ka... okay, that is the the extent of my knowledge in the Philippino dialect. Well, I may know a little more, but not enough to carry on an intelligent conversation. I am a Filippino, born in Manila, but unfortunately, I left the Phils when I was 4 years old and subsequently, lost my dialect once I went to American schools.

Although I am now an "Americano", I have never forgotten my heritage, and have had the privilege of escorting my parents back to the Islands during the 90's. The last time I was there was last year when I again escorted my Mom back to her hometown in Mindanao. I have always drawn to my culture and want to experience more of it.

I have an opportunity next year to go back again as a treat to myself. I plan on going to Cebu for two weeks to "explore" and take as many photos as I can. What I would like to know, is where are some "must see" sights I should go for photos ops and just experiencing all that is Philippines? I would like to stay away from the more touristy places like Boracay and have heard that Bohol was a better alternative. So, if anyone has any recommendations (that includes any hotels), I would greatly appreciate any replies - uh, as long as it's in English.

Salamat po!

Eugene,

Welcome to the forum. It's been too long since I did my last "Balikbayan" trip so I can't help you there. Hopefully some Cebuanos or folks familiar with the area can weigh in.

Maraming salamat for all your responses (even though I didn't understand some of what was said, but I can always ask my friends later). This will definitely give me a good start in researching places for photo ops. I am also into diving, so some of these sights will be very helpful! If you have any more sights or recommendations, feel free to let me know!!

Funny!!!

I feel I'm in the same situation. I was born in the states. Annapolis, Maryland, but my parents are both from Manila.

I pretty much learned my Tagalog from listening to my parents argue all the time!

My parents took me there when I was 2 in 1969 and I've only been back once in 1998 to visit relatives before my mom passed away. One of her wishes was for me and my brother to visit. My brother hasn't been there yet, but I made it and brought back pictures and memories for my mom. It was that trip that I decided to buy my first Nikon. A nikon N70.

Anyway... it's funny to sound out the words that I read in this thread and find that I understood most of them.... or enough to string along the sentance and know what was said...

I have a cousin in Antipolo (spelling?) that I instant message occasionally. I can get some info from her... and probably some quick weather updates... I'm in California so I'll have to wait until later in the day to get to her because of the time difference.

Let me know if you want me to get some info from her.

What parts of the P.I. are you going too?

P.S. I'm still trying to get some info on my family tree... My grandfather used to own a meat packing plant out there and called Superior Provisions... Does anyone remember or know about it? Also, one of my uncles now is one of the (many) V.P.'s of Pure Foods... not sure if anyone knows about them or not... Should probaly start another thread about it instead of hi-jacking this one...

Anyway... I'll see what I can get you from my cousin..

akmartinez,

Thanks for your response. I'll most likely go back to my mom's hometown in Misamis Occidental area of Mindanao for a few days, but I'm planning to spend most of my time in Cebu area and possibly take a few days on the island of Bohol since I heard that's a great alternative to Boracay (not too crowded...yet) and has some great scuba areas. I'd appreciate any information you can get from your cousin.

If I have any more time, i may just go to other areas as well.

Salamat po!

Cebu is a great place if you are planning to spend most of your time in one place. There are a pretty good number of places in Cebu that I could recomend that is away from the beaten path. Bantayan island is on top of my list. Exellent sunset/sunrise and gorgeous beaches. Tourist crowd is at minimum and resort/hotel is very reasonable. Camotes island is my next choice. Great place and reasonably priced. Kawasan falls in Moalboal Cebu, a local tourist area with plenty of photographic opportunities. Bohol is another exellent island to explore. It is about one hour boat ride from Cebu to Tabilaran city. There are plenty of private cars and vans you can hire for the day. The price includes the vehicle and driver that will take you to a number of Bohols main attraction. At the end of the day, you can catch the last ferry boat back to Cebu if you wish. These places are a minefield for photographic buffs. Good luck....

"Maraming salamat" for those great tips on places to go in Cebu! I will definitely try to catch as many of these places as I can. Now if I can find someone to help translate for me!! Fortunately, most Filippinos already know how to speak English. I've always felt like a fish out of water whenever I went to the Philippines with my parents. Being Filippino, I blend in well with everyone (except I tend to be a little taller than average)until I open my mouth. I always get these curious looks when people see another Filippino speaking Americano English. Thank goodness for cousins!!!

I went back last year after 18 years. We went to Boracay and Banaue and I recommend Banaue. It's a long commute but it's really worth it. Bring your wide lenses since it's mostly landscape and people. You should bring your fast glass though to get the true colors out.

Good luck.
